| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 0 | We e-filed a 2010 Form 990N on Thursday, December 29, 2011, but would like to also file a 2010 Form 990-EZ to disclose complete transparency for the benefit of potential funders. Our 2010 incomes were much less than $50,000, therefore a Form 990N was deemed a sufficient report, but after discussion we thought it would be beneficial to also file a Form 990-EZ. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation | 3 | Environmental Education for the Next Generation (EENG) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that links teams of college student-instructors with 1st and 2nd grade classes for weekly activities, experiments, and discussions that explore the relationship between humans and the natural world. Our Environmental Science & Sustainability Program has become hugely popular among teachers, volunteer instructors, and--most importantly--the students we teach. In two years we have expanded our Environmental Science and Sustainability Program to near 50 classrooms in four cities (Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo). The program was recently endorsed by high-level administration in both the Goleta Union and Santa Barbara School Districts, and we are currently working with them to designate the program as a requirement for all first and second grade classes throughout their districts. Our Education Team has developed two eight week units--one for 1st grade and one for 2nd. The lessons build upon each other, reinforcing important concepts over an extended period of time to improve retention and appreciation for the subject matter. Each lesson aligns closely with California State Board of Education Content Standard's, serving to enhance existing classroom activities. Our educational approach revolves around small group interaction. During the first classroom visit, program participants are assigned to a nature team made up of 5 students and 1 college-aged instructor. Throughout the quarter, teams build strong bonds with one another, and with instructors who act as role models and mentors for the members of their nature team. Our youth-to-youth component and offering all of the services of our program completely free of charge is what sets us apart from the field. We work primarily in public schools, which allows us to extend the sustainability movement beyond the traditional 'environmentalist' demographic, and to empower marginalized families in our community to become a part of the solution we need. When children are taught to truly understand the importance of an action as basic as turning off the lights before leaving a room, they are likely to bring this lesson home to their families and friends outside of the classroom. Spreading awareness through our youth is an incredibly effective way to create change in the broader community. When children are informed and speak confidently people listen. We believe that education is the key to societal progress, and that our program excites and empowers children to be incredibly powerful agents of change. |
