Form 990, Part I, Item 1

Quintessence Theatre Group is dedicated to the performance and adaptation of epic works of classic literature and drama for the contemporary state, which ignites the mind through the power of the actor, design and spoiken word. Quintessence Theatre exists to develop and produce theatre which is immediate and necessary, and that strives to attract new audiences to the art form by challenging its artists and audiences alike to consider what is essential in theatre and human nature.

Form 990, Part III, Item 4A

In September 2019, Quintessence Theatre Group (QTG) began its tenth anniversary season of classic repertory theatre at the historic Sedgwick Theater in the Mt Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. Season X's theme was "Magic and Dreams." Our productions included: THE SYNGE FESTIVAL (J.M. Synge): September 18November 3, 2019 The fall began in celebration of one of Ireland's finest writers, J.M. Synge, with a festival of his plays. The centerpiece is the masterpiece comedy THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, which was presented in repertory with THE SYNGE TRIPTYCH three celebrated short plays by J.M. Synge. Two festival weekends were held at the end of October during which staged readings were presented of Synge's other two full length plays. As part of the festival weekends, artists and audiences gathered following the evening performances for "A Pint and a Poem," where Synge's poetry was recited and Irish stout served. THE WIZARD OF OZ (L. Frank Baum): November 27, 2019 January 5, 2020 For our annual family-friendly classical musical during the holidays, QTG reimagined America's greatest fairytale, transforming the historic Sedgwick Theater into the magical Land of Oz. With its multi-generational appeal, the production engaged entire families, as well as hundreds of students through student matinees. RACHEL (Angelina Weld Grimke): January 29February 29, 2020 Premiering in 1917, RACHEL was the first full-length play by an African American woman performed in New York. This classic depicts an African American family at the turn of the 20th century striving to find life, liberty, and happiness in a Northern city. The production was extended due to the overwhelming demand from audiences, and pay-what-you-can tickets were made available for the entire last week of sold-out performances, thanks to underwriting from a generous supporter. THE DREAMS AND MADNESS Repertory and COVID19 Rehearsals began February 17, 2020 for Quintessence's Dreams and Madness Repertory (Camus' Caligula, Calderon de la Barca's Life is a Dream, and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream), which was scheduled to open March 25, 2020 and run through May 17, 2020. The COVID19 pandemic forced Quintessence to cancel the project during the final week of rehearsals. In May 2020, QTG presented a free online staged reading of Shakespeare's OTHELLO, which was attended by not only our subscribers and Northwest Philadelphia neighbors, but by theatre-lovers from Maine to Hawaii. May 24, we held our second Miscast Cabaret online, bringing together many of Quintessence's favorite actors to bring us together through song. QTG is always striving to be inclusive of our diverse community. QTG offers open captioning for deaf and hard of hearing patrons. QTG offers accessible tickets for low-income families including "pay what you can" performances for every production and the Art-reach ACCESS Live program, which allows Pennsylvania residents who monitor their government-issued cash, food, or medical benefits with an EBT card to have $2 tickets to our theatre. Through these programs, QTG lower the barriers that prevent many people from participating in arts and cultural programming in other parts of the region, and QTG welcomes the entire community to experience epic classic theatre. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING QTG's educational programming continued to introduce students from across the region to live theatre. 664 students in grades 5 to 12 enjoyed student matinees of The Wizard of Oz and Rachel. For the third year in a row, students from Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice partnered with Quintessence to receive a prestigious Picasso grant. This year, Parkway students created a lobby display for Rachel, participated in an in-school workshop, and attended a post-show discussion with the cast.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Quintessence Theatre Group is dedicated to the performance and adaptation of epic works of classic literature and drama for the contemporary state, which ignites the mind through the power of the actor, design and spoiken word. Quintessence Theatre exists to develop and produce theatre which is immediate and necessary, and that strives to attract new audiences to the art form by challenging its artists and audiences alike to consider what is essential in theatre and human nature.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1In September 2019, Quintessence Theatre Group (QTG) began its tenth anniversary season of classic repertory theatre at the historic Sedgwick Theater in the Mt Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2The managing director and select Board members thoroughly review the Form 990. After that review, an electronic copy of the Form 990 is provided to the full Board prior to filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3The conflict of interest policy is monitored by the Executive Director on an ongoing basis.
