Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

Th organization provides a copy of the 990 before it is filed to all officers and board members. The 990 is thoroughly reviewed by the board treasurer and the executive director for completeness, accuracy, and reasonability. All other board members are given the oppportunity to provide feedback as well.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

On an annual basis, all directors and officers are required to review the conflict of interest and sign a statement which affirms that the person: a. Has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy b. Has read and understands the policy c. Has agreed to comply with the policy d. Understands nbm is charitable and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it must engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person, he/she shall leave the board or executive committee meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The remaining board or executive committee members shall decide if a conflict of interest exists. An interested person may make a presentation at the board or executive committee meeting, but after the presentation, he/she shall leave the meeting during the discussion of, and the vote on, the transaction or arrangement involving the possible conflict of interest. The chairperson of the board or executive committee shall, if appropriate, appoint a disinterested person or committee to investigate alternatives to the proposed transaction or arrangement. After exercising due diligence, the board or executive committee shall determine whether nbm can obtain with reasonable efforts a more advantageous transaction or arrangement from a person or entity that would not give rise to a conflict of interest.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Compensation for the executive director is determined by the board of directors, the members of which are independent of the executive director. In determining the level of compensation that is reasonable and appropriate, the board of directors reviews salary and benefit compensation studies by independent sources, job postings for similar positions, and publicly available compensation information from form 990s of organizations of similar size and complexity within the region. The organization contemporaneously documents the deliberation and determination of officer compensation. This information is maintained outside of the general minutes of the organization.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 19

The organization's financial statements, governing documents, and conflict of interest policy are made available to the public upon written request to the organization's address.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Needs beyond medicine has a mission to decrease the burden of cancer on those undergoing treatment by providing financial support for non-medical expenses. Needs beyond medicine focuses on providing educational outreach regarding the importance of early cancer detection and prevention.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Our main focus at needs beyond medicine, the relief program, addresses patients living costs in support of their treatments. In 2022, through our donors we were able to ease financial burden and stress to 171 people who are fighting through one of the hardest battles. The individuals we serve represent a diverse cross-section of our utah community. Of the grants awarded in 2022, 114 of recipients reported an income level below 35,000. We continue to have strong working partnerships with many utah hospitals, clinics, and cancer care programs. In 2022, we also increased our sponsored health educational programs with the assistance of 22 interns at southern utah university, utah valley university, brigham young university, university of utah and weber state university. These students were excellent ambassadors throughout the year, creating and updating educational handouts, and supporting local events for needs beyond medicine programs.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0NEEDS BEYOND MEDICINE HAS A MISSION TO DECREASE THE BURDEN OF CANCER ON THOSE UNDERGOING TREATMENT BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR NON-MEDICAL EXPENSES. NEEDS BEYOND MEDICINE FOCUSES ON PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY CANCER DETECTION AND PREVENTION.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1OUR MAIN FOCUS AT NEEDS BEYOND MEDICINE, THE RELIEF PROGRAM, ADDRESSES PATIENTS LIVING COSTS IN SUPPORT OF THEIR TREATMENTS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4COMPENSATION FOR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR IS DETERMINED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THE MEMBERS OF WHICH ARE INDEPENDENT OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.
