Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The world justice projectr (wjp) is an independent, multidisciplinary organization working to advance the rule of law worldwide. Effective rule of law reduces corruption, combats poverty and disease, and protects people from injustices large and small. It is the foundation for communities of equity, opportunity, and peace-underpinning development, accountable government, and respect for fundamental rights. Through wjp's three mutually reinforcing program areas.research and scholarship; the wjp rule of law index; and engagement.the wjp seeks increased understanding of the rule of law and its foundational importance; greater rule of law adherence by governments; and multidisciplinary, home-grown cultures of the rule of law.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The wjp rule of law index is an innovative quantitative assessment tool created and designed by the wjp. The rule of law index is the only comprehensive assessment tool of its kind that focuses on analyzing compliance with the rule of law. It is the first index to treat the rule of law comprehensively. The wjp rule of law index 2011 report was publicly released in november 2011 and is the culmination of more than three years of development, consultation, and vetting with academics, practitioners, and country leaders from over 100 countries and 17 professional disciplines. The report offers a detailed and comprehensive picture of the extent to which 66 countries adhere to the rule of law in practice based upon 9 factors that are further disaggregated into 52 sub-factors. The report provides detailed information and original data on: limited government powers; absence of corruption; order and security; fundamental rights; open government; regulatory enforcement; civil justice; and criminal justice. It serves as a reliable and independent data source for policy makers, businesses, academics, and civil society leaders to assess a nation's adherence to the rule of law in practice; identify a nation's strengths and weaknesses in comparison to similarly situated countries; and track changes over time. In 2011, the index team presented their findings to numerous audiences worldwide, including governments, inter-governmental organizations, business, academic institutions, and civil society.
Activity 3
Domestic outreach - the wjp promotes increased awareness about the concept and impact of the rule of law in the united states through its domestic outreach program. Representatives from state and local bar associations, law schools, and other local institutions worked with wjp leadership to sponsor state-level outreach meetings.

IRS990/Description0AT OUR EVENTS, THE WORLD JUSTICE PROJECT (WJP) ASSEMBLES CHANGE AGENTS AND INNOVATORS AT GLOBAL AND REGIONAL MEETINGS TO INSPIRE GOVERNMENT REFORMS - WHETHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY - AND INCUBATE PROGRAMS AT THE GRASSROOTS LEVEL. THESE EVENTS HAVE LEVERAGED THE COMMITMENT AND EXPERTISE OF LEADERS FROM DIVERSE SECTORS, GENERATING DOZENS OF PROGRAMS AND BUILDING GLOBAL, MULTIDISCIPLINARY RULE OF LAW NETWORKS, ULTIMATELY AFFECTING THE LIVES OF COUNTLESS INDIVIDUALS. IN JANUARY 2011, THE WJP HELD ITS SECOND MAJOR REGIONAL CONFERENCE IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION, IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA. THIS CONFERENCE BROUGHT TOGETHER 140 LEADERS FROM 35 COUNTRIES, FOCUSED ON MITIGATING ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION, ENSURING THE RIGHTS OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES, AND BUILDING A BETTER BUSINESS ENABLING ENVIRONMENT. THE WORLD JUSTICE FORUM III, HELD IN BARCELONA, SPAIN, BROUGHT TOGETHER OVER 400 LEADERS FROM MORE THAN 100 COUNTRIES TO SHARE THE IMPACT THAT RULE OF LAW WEAKNESSES HAVE ON THEIR DISCIPLINES AND IDENTIFY CRUCIAL AREAS WHERE COLLABORATIVE CROSS-DISCIPLINARY EFFORTS WILL ADVANCE AND STRENGTHEN THE RULE OF LAW. PARTICIPANTS DESIGNED NEARLY 50 NEW, INNOVATIVE MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS IN SUCH AREAS AS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, FAIR ELECTIONS, ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC HEALTH, FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION.
