Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

A draft of the 990 is sent electronically to the head of school and circulated to all board members for review. The board is asked to review it for accuracy, questions, and general information. After a specified time (usually two weeks), a reminder email is sent to review the document and ask that each board member respond with either questions and comments, or that they sign off on the document. The head of school compiles any notes and comments and emails them to the accounting firm. The head of school then notifies the accountant that the document has been reviewed and approved by the board.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

When a conflict of interest arises, this conflict is recognized and discussed with subsequent action dependent on the nature of the relationship. The policy states that members who are in conflict should recuse themselves from voting and from deliberating to ensure that there is no undo influence on the part of members in conflicts and that all negotiations be kept at arm length.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Compensations are based on comparative data from schools in our association (the northwest association of independent schools), the publics schools in our district and schools in the national association of independent schools.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request. Documents can be emailed, reviewed in person at the school or available as a paper copy.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

We honor adolescence as a critical development window for learning essential academic, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The sage school creates a thriving environment for students through a challenging, authentic curriculum centered on human ecology and engaging experiences designed specifically to promote self-awarness, community responsiility, and a sense of place.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Education: our goal is to create an intensive, experiential learning environment for adolescents that is committed to educational excellence and the development of self-awarness through community action, and humanitarian and ecological responsibility. The sage school is a progressive school, dedicated to a transdisciplinary, project based, authentic, and playfully rigorous curriculum. This curriculum is delivered by teams of faculty working closely together in small groups. These groups are nimble, adaptive, and responsive. The commitment to this team structure, which provides everything from the rapid prototyping of ideas to a critical collegial perspective, is essential to the delivery of our program, to keeping a low student to teacher ratio, and to delivering the most dynamic educational experiences we can.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Field studies - all education is experiential. The critical question is "what is the quality and nature of those experiences?" we believe our students should be immersed in and interact with the world around them- in their immediate communities, in the regions surrounding the school, and in environments from rural to urban to international.our field studies program takes our students into the field 20-25 days a year- over 140 days in 7 years; the equivalent of an additional year of school. Field studies are designed for students to directly experience the world around them. They include everything from simple field trips to local art museums, to a 15 day international trip to ecuador for all of our seniors. The best field studies intentionally blend the critical areas of adolescent development- they are academic, they are cognitive, they are social, and they are emotional. Through these experiences, our students come to know the critical elements of how humans interact with their social, built, and natural environments; students develop genuine community understanding and responsibility; students learn deeply a sense of their place; and, ultimately, students develop a strong sense of who they are.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE A SCHOOL FOR ADOLESCENTS. WHILE OUR TUITION IS ALL-INCLUSIVE- WE DO NOT CHARGE FAMILIES ADDITIONAL FEES FOR MATERIALS, FOR FIELD STUDY TRIPS, OR FOR OTHER PROGRAMMING- WE ALSO APPRECIATE THAT THERE ARE MANY FAMILIES WHO CANNOT AFFORD OUR SCHOOL. WE ARE COMMITTED TO ACCESS, WITH NEARLY 18% OF OUR BUDGET DEDICATED TO FINANCIAL AID, AND OVER 42% OF OUR FAMILIES RECEIVING SOME SORT OF DIRECT FINANCIAL AID. WE BELIEVE THIS SUPPORTS OUR EDUCATIONAL VALUES, OUR DESIRE TO MAKE OUR SCHOOL AS BROADLY AVAILABLE TO MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY AS POSSIBLE, AND OUR HOPE FOR A DIVERSE STUDENT BODY.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/GrantAmt0284110
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0FIELD STUDIES - ALL EDUCATION IS EXPERIENTIAL.
