“Stem / robotics program since 2011, the organization has had a robotics initiative that seeks to inspire new brunswick public school students to better connect with math, science and technology related disciplines as well as ignite their aspirations to pursue careers as scientists, inventors, engineers and even stem related educators. This stem project has provided 6th through 12th grade students with hands-on and inquiry based learning experiences that entails designing, building and programming robotics. With funding support from bristol-myers squibb, nbef collaborates with the new brunswick middle school to implement a comprehensive robotics program that engages 6th through 8th grade students in hands-on and inquiry-based experiences using the latest generation of lego mindstorms robots. This innovative activity is administered year-round with student participants (1) utilizing lego element motors and sensors to build robots; (2) programming computers to prompt the robots movement, reaction and sound; (3) competing in first lego league (fll) regional qualifying events held each year in november; and (4) serving as peer leaders by taking their robotics demonstrations into the districts elementary schools, and mentoring younger children. Nbef recently expanded the program to include new brunswick high school and new brunswick health sciences technology high school students (9th through 12th graders), who are competing at the first tech level. Innovative teacher grant program since 2008, nbef has provided over 100,000 for new brunswick public school teachers to implement innovative projects and activities in classrooms and after-school programs. This special collaboration has involved more than 70 educators and has impacted thousands of students ranging from pre- kindergarten through grade 12 in areas such as reading & literacy, performing arts, stem, etc. The process begins with teachers submitting grant proposals that offer novel concepts and strategies which result in dynamic learning experiences for students. Over 100 enrichment projects and activities have been implemented (both inside and outside the classrooms) through the nbef teacher grant program. The program has impacted more than 3,000 students annually ranging from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Nbef also partners with johnson & johnson and the new brunswick public school district in the funding and implementing professional development, curriculum writing and assessments in transitioning to next generation science standards (ngss). The ngss focuses on improving science education (k-12) through three-dimensional learning giving local educators the flexibility to design classroom learning experiences that stimulate students interest in science and prepares them for college, careers and citizenship. The nurture thru nature (ntn) program introduces elementary school students to the wonders of nature and natural science. Ntn is a partnership between rutgers university, johnson & johnson worldwide, new brunswick public schools and the new brunswick education foundation (nbef). Nurture thru nature is offered as a summer program on three days a week during july and august and continues as an after-school program in fall and spring during the regular school year.”
