Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 3

During the transition window between when outgoing executive director, Jay Michaelson stepped down (3/31/13) and when incoming executive director, Debra Kolodny officially began her duties (10/1/13) each performed their transitional duties as independent contractors, for which they were compensated separate from the salary earned during their official tenures.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The 990 draft was sent electronically to all board members, with a window for questions and responses being solicited in same correspondence, for inclusion in and correction of final document.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The process for hiring the executive director concluded in March 2013, with a start date of October 2013. The board consulted with peer organizations to ascertain appropriate pay rate. All subsequent hires were reviewed by the executive director, with salaries determined by review of comparable positions in peer organizations.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

All public documents are made available upon request, by sending an inquiry to the email address provided on the organization's website. Effective March 2014, all organizational documents, as well as financial books are maintained at the Oregon office by Director of Finance, Theresa ("Rivka") Gevurtz.

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

In addition to its flagship program, of spiritual retreats, specific demographic groups expanded their engagement. In 2013 student programming expanded its reach with on-campus programs, as well as launched the first national Student Retreat. In late 2013 Nehirim hired its first Director of Student Programming. Similarly, the number of women reached by Nehirim's monthly Ma'agal gatherings increased, doubling the number of service hours by staff. Each of these are now delineated as separate program services on Part III, 4b & 4c.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 11G

Due to the transitional nature of this year, along with multiple events in one particular month, the organization relied heavily on independent contractors to assist with office and retreat support (as well as the aforementioned significant component of executive director transitional pay), while staff was being hired and trained.

Form 990, Part XI, Line 9

Prior period adjustment determined during subsequent audit of 2012 financial statements.

IRS990/Desc0Our flagship programs, intensive weekend spiritual retreats, are life-changing experiences that have reached thousands LGBT Jews since Nehirim began. Participants have reported that Nehirim caused them to pursue a career in the rabbinate, study at yeshivas in Israel, and take leadership roles in communal organizations. In 2013, Nehirim held 7 retreats (6 in the Northeast and 1 on the West Coast), engaging 335 registrants in its immersive, cohort-based retreat programming.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Nehirim's retreat programming for young adults took a significant step forward as we held our first national Student Retreat in March, 2013. 51 students attended from all around the country, and rated the retreat an average of 4.2 on a scale of 1 to 5. From the inception of Nehirim's Student Program (in mid-2012 until end of 2013), Nehirim hosted nine on-campus events related to LGBT social justice issues. Events were held at University of Colorado, Union College, City University of New York, Boston University, American University, UNC Asheville, Dickinson College, University of California-Riverside, and University of Pennsylvania. In total, approximately 500 students (undergraduate and graduate) attended these programs.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Ma'agal, Nehirim's support group for Women, has increased attendance every year, despite the fact that most women "graduate" from Ma'agal within a year or two of starting to attend, (as they find their voice and feel secure enough to be open about who they are, outside of Ma'agal and Nehirim). This past year, we have between 10 and 18 women who attend each month.

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartIVGrp/ExplanationTxt0Given this is the 5th year for determining Public Support, and given changes in fiscal oversight, it came to light that prior year Schedule As where computed incorrectly in 2010-2012, overstating contributions by including Program Revenue in these totals. Additionally, for purposes of all four years 2009-2012, staff failed to exclude one unusual grant, in the form of a multi-year matching grant for start-up of the fledgling organization. Line 1 for 2013 reflects these adjustments in computation of final percentage.

During this period Rabbi Kolodny received pay as an independent contractor in the cumulative amount of $8,031. This was a function solely of the transition which concluded when Rabbi Kolodny was able to assume full responsibility for the organization upon official start date, so appearance of excess benefit automatically corrected, by virtue salary & reimbursement policies for employees, which took effect at that point.

During this transitional period, Mr. Michaelson billed for his consulting time through Metatronics Inc., a separate entity of which he is the owner. The total compensation billed for 2013 was $3,337, $2,437 of which was paid out during 2013 with the remaining $900 account payable paid in early 2014. These transactions were a function solely of the transition which concluded when Rabbi Kolodny was able to assume full responsibility for the organization upon official start date. At the conclusion of his tenure as executive director, Mr. Michaelson, as part of the transitional process retained his role as a member of the board for 1 year to allow for continuity.
IRS990ScheduleL/DisqualifiedPersonExBnftTrGrp/TransactionDesc2In 2013 Rabbi David Dunn Bauer transitioned from a staff role, as Director of West Coast Programming, to that of a Board Director, both with the conclusion of funding for his prior role, and to provided continued experience and expertise during the executive transition. IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0In addition to its flagship program, of spiritual retreats, specific demographic groups expanded their engagement.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3The process for hiring the executive director concluded in March 2013, with a start date of October 2013. The board consulted with peer organizations to ascertain appropriate pay rate. All subsequent hires were reviewed by the executive director, with salaries determined by review of comparable positions in peer organizations.
