Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

At the mikeroweworks foundation, we're on a mission to challenge the stigmas and stereotypes about the skilled trades and help close the skills gap. We're redefining the definition of a good education and a good job, because we don't believe that a four-year degree is the best path for the most people. We want people to understand the impact of skilled labor on their lives, and we're convinced that the solution starts with a new appreciation for hard work. This year we spent time building upon our own programs, the work ethic scholarship program and the work ethic curriculum. Since 2014, we have provided financial assistance to the next generation of skilled workers through our annual work ethic scholarship program. For the second year in a row, we provided nearly $1 million in work ethic scholarships that supported 134 students pursuing 17 skilled trade programs in 38 states across the country. The scholarships ranged from $1,800 to $20,000 per recipient, and each recipient received a pair of wolverine boots donated directly to these students as part of wolverine's project bootstrap. We also helped facilitate the granting of an additional $40,000 through direct tuition credits for work ethic scholarship recipients attending universal technical institute. Through our promotion of this program this year, we shared stories of former recipients and fun facts about the trades that garnered nearly 13 million social media impressions. In 2021, we also spent a significant amount of time further developing our work ethic curriculum based on the s.w.e.a.t. Pledge that aims to give students the employability skills they need to be successful in their jobs long term. We expanded the curriculum for both high schools and colleges implementation and created both hybrid and in-person formats. With the help of wsu tech, we trained instructors at 22 new colleges and high schools and developed the mrw toolbox to create awareness of the program on school campuses and help support instructor implementation. We issued approximately 1,500 certifications in 2021 to students who embodied the core principles of the s.w.e.a.t. Pledgework ethic, personal responsibility, delayed gratification, and a positive attitude. In addition to public support raised through donations and campaigns in support of our initiatives, we generated additional revenue through the licensing arrangement with bfive40, in which 100% of the net proceeds benefitted our foundation. We also continued to sell books, posters, and other merchandise on our ebay store, encourage employers to match funds donated by its employees; and we participated in charity support networks, including amazonsmile, ebay for charity, and the paypal giving fund to raise funds to support our mission.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0WE FIRST STARTED TO DEVELOP A WORK ETHIC CURRICULUM IN 2019 THAT WE PILOTED AT A HANDFUL OF COLLEGES IN 2020. THE WORK ETHIC CURRICULUM FOCUSES ON THE 12 STATEMENTS OF THE S.W.E.A.T. PLEDGE. EACH STATEMENT HAS A STORY, AND EACH STORY COMES FROM MIKE ROWE'S PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH ENTREPRENEURS AND HARDWORKING PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. EACH LESSON BREAKS DOWN THE ORIGIN OF EACH STATEMENT IN 12 LESSONS AND EXPLORES WHY WE BELIEVE EVERY STUDENT AND WORKER CAN BENEFIT FROM EMBRACING THIS PLEDGE, REGARDLESS OF THEIR JOB OR SKILLSET. THIS YEAR, WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME REVISING THE EXISTING CURRICULUM AS WELL AS EXPANDING IT TO INCLUDE A SECONDARY VERSION AS WELL AS HYBRID AND IN-PERSON FORMATS FOR BOTH SECONDARY AND POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE CURRICULUM, WE'VE ISSUED MORE THAN 2,500 WORK ETHIC CERTIFICATIONS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0AT THE MIKEROWEWORKS FOUNDATION, WE'RE ON A MISSION TO CHALLENGE THE STIGMAS AND STEREOTYPES ABOUT THE SKILLED TRADES AND HELP CLOSE THE SKILLS GAP.
