“Mmp's programming has a ground-breaking structure that embeds social- emotional learning into its curriculum leading to substantial improvement in participant's positive youth development. Our ensemble-based orchestral musical education programming promotes three critical features recognized as optimal for positive youth development programs: -positive adult-youth relationships, -activities that build skills, and -opportunities for youth to utilize these skills in community activities. During the 2016-2017 school year, students came from all over miami-dade county with concentrated activity in the communities of little haiti, liberty city little havana, and miami springs. Of our students, 56% are hispanic, 40% are black non-hispanic, and 4% are white/other. 57% of students were female, 43% were male. 82% of students came from low-income families. Miami music project operated three student-centric, tuition-free programs: the children orchestras are an after-school program in under-resourced communities. Students attend classes free of charge 2 hours daily, and up to 5 days/week, and participated in multiple performances throughout the year. The program develops academic, cognitive and social skills needed for success in life, creating engaged, contributing members and future leaders of society. The children orchestras reached 479 students. 185 students participated in the summer music camp. This four-week program was a series of intensive music learning, culminating in a spectacular final performance. 4 hours of daily instruction and musical instruments were provided to each students to continue their music education over the summer in a fun and safe environment. The orchestra boot camps reached 120 students. These workshops are designed to nurture risk-taking, hard work, and excellence through challenging repertoire. Instruction was provided by miami music project's teaching artists and distinguished guests such as michael tilson thomas and james judd. Through our community partnerships, students also participated in multiple enrichment opportunities, gaining free access to the community's most anticipated cultural events. Altogether, miami music project reached 784 students from 128 schools in 61 zip codes. Additionally, teaching artists training program was provided to all faculty, consisting of an intensive training week and ongoing professional development opportunities throughout the year. Over the year, miami music project reached new heights: -miami music project was recognized as an exemplary dade partner with the superintendent's choice award 2017. This is the highest honor given to community-based organizations by the superintendent of the miami-dade county public schools, -sponsored by school board chairman, dr. Feldman recognized miami music project's commitment to helping the youth of miami-dade county with a m- dcps school board proclamation, -the national endowment for the arts awarded mmp a 25,000 artworks grant to provide tuition-free, year-round music program to under-resourced communities in miami, -students performed the national anthem at the florida democratic party leadership gala featuring vice president joe biden as the keynote speaker. Additionally, miami music project students were able to achieve incredible things individually. All mmp students who graduated high school went on to study in college, including florida state university, santa fe college, and royal conservatoire at the hague in holland. Multiple students successfully auditioned for and attended the national take a stand festival and performed at the walt disney concert hall in los angeles, ca, under the baton of maestro gustavo dudamel. Miami music project was able to accomplish all of this while remaining fiscally sound and responsible. All activities were fully funded thanks to generous donations from individuals, foundations, and government cultural institutions.”
“The organization has adopted the provisions of asc no 740, "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes" ("asc no 740"). Asc 740 required that the impact of tax positions to be recognized in the financial statements if they are more likely than not of being sustained upon examination. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. At 6/30/17, there were no uncertain tax positions. The organization files tax returns with us federal and other tax authorities for which statue limitations may go back to the year ended 2014.”
