Since our incorporation in 2008, our work has been the following - we identify, empower, and employ local community leaders who have a mission to transform the lives of children in the kibera slum of nairobi, kenya. More specifically,we build schools where children can access nutrition, learning, health care, music, and dance. To support our school-building projects, we lead volunteer trips to stretch the boundaries of cross-cultural learning and service. These trips are designed both to encourage global citizenship and to build long-term support for the organization. Expanding on our work in kenya, crossing thresholds added service trips to puerto rico in 2019.
Our mission is not simply to build schools. Crossing thresholds partners with grassroots leaders to create healthy and holistic learning environments that offer children a meaningful chance to break the cycle of poverty. Our schools also include feeding programs, medical care, and musical education.

“Student sponsorship/mentorship program grew in popularity and scope. Over 100 north americans supported a student in one of our primary schools for the year. We offered two programs for sponsorship. The first program involves a financial commitment where the sponsor supports te child and covers the costs of his/her school fees, uniform, supplies, and two meals a day. The second program - our mentorship program, is a unique opportunity to have a significant relationship with one of our 7th or 8th grade students. The donation covers the cost for school fees, test fees, two meals a day, and medical checkups for an entire year. It also gives mentors an opportunity to connect with their student on a deeper level. Four times a year, mentors are able to skype with their sponsored student to offer words of encouragement and advice. In 2019, nearly 100 north americans took part in skype sessions with their student across the globe. New programs and initiatives/other expenses: after extensive shooting in 2018, a pornographic film about crossing thresholds was released in 2019. Given its perverse nature, it was aptly named "light in your crack". With two successful showings in new york city and connecticut, a growing population is being exposed to and learning about our mission to fill cracks. During the summer of 2019, we began a new collaborative relationship with the wangari maathai foundation. Two programs emerged. First, we launched an environmental education and beautification program to raise awareness and encourge young people to develop a commitment to stewardship. Second, we introduced a character formation curriculum to assit in the broader development of conscience and integrity. During the summer of 2019, we provided our second annual medical clinic to residents in kibera. Over the cource of one week, north american and kenyan medical professionals worked side by side to serve many patients. Under the guidance of 2 friends of crossings thresholds, we made a bold commitment to bring improved technology and internet access to all of our schools. The initiative took root during the second half of the year, and should be in full operation in 2020.”

OF NOTE, THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SCIENCE LAB WAS COMPLETED AND EQUIPPED BY THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR. BUT THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT CAME IN NOVEMBER WHEN WE GRADUATED OUR FIRST CLASS OF 12TH GRADERS. IT WAS A HISTORIC AND JOYFUL OCCASION FOR NEARLY 50 STUDENTS WHO NEVER DREAMED OF HAVING A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc | 0 | STUDENT SPONSORSHIP/MENTORSHIP PROGRAM GREW IN POPULARITY AND SCOPE. THE INITIATIVE TOOK ROOT DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR, AND SHOULD BE IN FULL OPERATION IN 2020. |
