Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The federal form 990 was prepared in a draft format. This draft format was presented at a meeting of the board of directors. At this meeting the draft form 990 was reviewed in depth by the members of the board of directors. Questions on the return were discussed at this time. The members of the board of directors then had additional time after that meeting to review the draft form 990 and to suggest changes. After all the input from the members of the board of directors the form 990 was finalized and filed with the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

During 2011 kce adopted a conflict of interest policy. This policy was reviewed and signed by all members of the board of directors. This policy is reviewed and signed on an annual basis by all of the members of the board of directors.

FORM 990, PART 1, LINE 1: ORGANIZATIONS MISSION

The kakenya center for excellence's mission is to advance the development of africa by creating transformational educational, health and leadership initiatives designed to equip rural girls to expand their horizons and realize their full potential. We envision a future in which african girls are valued and respected and have equal opportunity and ability to lead and engage their families, communities, and the world. Our three core programs (kce primary boarding school, jilinde health and leadership training, and network for excellence) operate in enoosaen, kenya, and are designed to empower and motivate vulnerable and marginalized young girls through education to become agents of change and to break the cycle of destructive cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (fgm) and early forced marriage. As in most villages in kenya, women and girls in enoosaen remain severely marginalized by cultural traditions. Girls in the maasai community regularly stop going to school and are married off at adolescence after undergoing fgm, a painful and dangerous practice that is considered a rite of passage to adulthood. When girls are not educated, the cycle of marginalization continues from one generation to the next, with men and tribal elders dictating a girl's present and future without considering her social, financial, physical, or emotional well-being. Around the globe, data clearly indicates that investing in a girl's education creates profound positive outcomes that impact not only the girl herself, but her family and community, as well. Kce's mission is to change this situation for rural communities by demonstrating the great value that comes from educating girls by providing srhr information and services and by eradicating gender-based violence, stigma and discrimination. When girls are educated, the oppressive cycle can be broken from one generation to the next. When cultural norms change, new opportunities open for the social, financial, physical, and emotional well-being of girls and boys as the next generation of adults. Kce's programs are demonstrating that there is a viable alternative to what has been practiced in the past, transforming the lives of adolescent girls and giving their community and nation the benefit of dedicated, educated, confident young women.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1: ORGANIZATIONS MISSION

The kakenya center for excellence's mission is to advance the development of africa by creating transformational initiatives designed to equip rural girls to expand their horizons and realize their full potential. We envision a future in which african girls are valued and respected and have equal opportunity and ability to lead and engage their families, communities, and the world. Our three core programs (kce primary boarding school, jilinde health and leadership training, and network for excellence) operate in enoosaen, kenya, and are designed to empower and motivate young girls through education to become agents of change and to break the cycle of destructive cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (fgm) and early forced marriage. Kce was founded by dr. Kakenya ntaiya, a native of enoosaen who knows firsthand what a difference education can make in a girl's life. Engaged at age 5, dr. Ntaiya was to be married as soon as she underwent fgm, an event that would mark the end of her education and the beginning of preparations for marriage. But dr. Ntaiya had a different plan. First, she negotiated with her father that she would undergo fgm only if she would be allowed to finish secondary school. He agreed. A few years later, she negotiated with her village elders to attend college on a scholarship in the united states, something no girl from enoosaen had ever done. She promised to use her education to benefit her community, and the entire village collected money to pay for her journey. This promise led her to a vision of forever changing the traditional trajectory for girls in her community. Kce is dr. Ntaiya's way of using her education to benefit enoosaen by giving village girls a pathway toward excellence and leadership, and it is a powerful example of how girls give back to their communities when they have opportunities and education.

THE KAKENYA CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IS COMMITTED TO PROVIDING OUR STUDENTS WITH ALL THE RESOURCES THEY NEED TO EXCEL. THE PROGRAM TAKES A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EDUCATING RURAL, VULNERABLE AND MARGINALIZED GIRLS BY INCORPORATING HEALTH AND LEADERSHIP ELEMENTS INTO THE CLASSROOM CURRICULUM AND ADDRESSING ALL NEEDS, INCLUDING PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL AS WELL AS ACADEMIC. OUR DORMITORY ALLOWS GIRLS TO BOARD AT THE SCHOOL RATHER THAN FACE THE DAILY DANGERS OF WALKING LONG DISTANCES TO AND FROM THEIR HOMES. THE BOARDING FACILITY ALSO ALLOWS GIRLS ADEQUATE TIME TO LEARN AND THRIVE IN THEIR STUDIES, AS OPPOSED TO THE BURDENSOME WORKLOADS THEY ENCOUNTER IN THEIR HOMES, WHERE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM COUNTLESS CHORES AND CARE FOR THEIR YOUNGER SIBLINGS. WE PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS WITH ALL THEIR SCHOOL NEEDS, INCLUDING UNIFORMS, THREE NUTRITIOUS MEALS PER DAY, TEXTBOOKS, AND OTHER LEARNING MATERIALS. OUR SCHOOL IS STAFFED WITH WELL-TRAINED TEACHERS, AND OUR CLASS SIZE REMAINS SMALL, AT HALF THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. WE ENHANCE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCES WITH EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, CLUBS, SPORTS, FIELD TRIPS, AND MORE. 100% OF OUR GIRLS HAVE AVOIDED FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM) AND EARLY FORCED MARRIAGE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0JILINDE HEALTH AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM: KCE'S JILINDE PROJECT TEACHES YOUNG PEOPLE HOW TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST HARMFUL PRACTICES, GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND LIFE-THREATENING DISEASES; TO PREPARE THEMSELVES WITH AN EDUCATION AND INFORMATION ABOUT MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR BETTER FUTURE TO REACH THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL; AND TO PROMOTE ACCURATE INFORMATION AND NEW IDEAS ABOUT SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS (SRHR) AMONG THEIR FRIENDS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES. THIS PROGRAM FOSTERS AN INCLUSIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KCE STUDENTS AND GIRLS IN THE SURROUNDING REGION ATTENDING OTHER PRIMARY SCHOOLS, SERVING YOUTH BETWEEN THE AGES OF 10 AND 16 IN THE TRANSMARA REGION, WHICH IS POPULATED PRIMARILY BY MARGINALIZED AND VULNERABLE GROUPS. TWICE EACH YEAR KCE HOSTS A WEEK-LONG CAMP TO INCREASE GIRLS' KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HEALTH RELATED ISSUES AND TRAIN THEM IN LEADERSHIP-RELATED SKILLS SUCH AS COMMUNICATION AND ASSERTIVENESS. GIRLS ARE ALSO TAUGHT ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS ACCORDING TO KENYAN LAW AND WHAT TO DO WHEN THOSE RIGHTS ARE VIOLATED. THE PROGRAM IS BUILT AROUND MODULES RELATED TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, LEGAL RIGHTS, PREVENTION OF FGM, EARLY FORCED MARRIAGE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THAT LEADS TO GREATER SUPPORT FOR GIRLS' EDUCATION. PARTICIPANTS ARE CHALLENGED TO DEVELOP THEIR DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE AND ARE GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS IN A SAFE, ALL-GIRLS ENVIRONMENT. IN 2014 WE EXPANDED THIS PROGRAM TO INCLUDE MONTHLY WEEKEND TRAININGS HOSTED AT SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE REGION. THE WEEKEND TRAININGS ALSO INCLUDE A NEW ELEMENT: TRAINING FOR BOYS. TRAINERS STRESS THE IMPORTANCE THAT BOYS JOIN WITH GIRLS TO BECOME A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS THAT STANDS TOGETHER ON THE PRINCIPLE OF EDUCATION FOR ALL AND THAT PROTECTS THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN EVERYWHERE. IN 2015 WE WERE ABLE TO REACH 3,000+ STUDENTS THROUGH THE JILINDE TRAINING PROGRAM.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0NETWORK FOR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM: KCE'S NETWORK FOR EXCELLENCE WAS DEVELOPED AS A WAY TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OUR GRADUATES AS THEY TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY EDUCATION AT OUR BOARDING SCHOOL TO SECONDARY EDUCATION IN DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND IN THE FUTURE UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGES AROUND THE WORLD. WE ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING OUR GIRLS BEYOND PRIMARY SCHOOL, ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED THROUGHOUT SECONDARY SCHOOL AND BEYOND. IN OUR STUDENTS' HOME COMMUNITIES, FEW GIRLS ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE BEYOND PRIMARY SCHOOL DUE TO PROHIBITIVE COSTS AND CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS. KCE'S PROGRAM PROVIDES ONGOING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, MENTORING, COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT AMONG THE GIRLS AT DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY. IT INCLUDES TRAININGS AT OUR CAMPUS IN ENOOSAEN DURING ACADEMIC HOLIDAYS, MENTORSHIP THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH OUR JILINDE PROGRAM FOR PARTICIPANTS. OUR ONGOING ASSISTANCE ENSURES THAT OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL GRADUATES CAN CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION AT QUALITY HIGH SCHOOLS AND GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY MENTORING OTHER GIRLS IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS INCLUDING GIRLS IN KCE'S BOARDING SCHOOL. IN 2015, ALL 55 OF OUR BOARDING SCHOOL ALUMNI PARTICIPATED IN OUR NETWORK FOR EXCELLENCE. 100% OF OUR GIRLS HAVE AVOIDED FGM AND EARLY FORCED MARRIAGE.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE KAKENYA CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE'S MISSION IS TO ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA BY CREATING TRANSFORMATIONAL EDUCATIONAL, HEALTH AND LEADERSHIP INITIATIVES DESIGNED TO EQUIP RURAL GIRLS TO EXPAND THEIR HORIZONS AND REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE KAKENYA CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE'S MISSION IS TO ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA BY CREATING TRANSFORMATIONAL INITIATIVES DESIGNED TO EQUIP RURAL GIRLS TO EXPAND THEIR HORIZONS AND REALIZE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. WE ENVISION A FUTURE IN WHICH AFRICAN GIRLS ARE VALUED AND RESPECTED AND HAVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY AND ABILITY TO LEAD AND ENGAGE THEIR FAMILIES, COMMUNITIES, AND THE WORLD.
