“Staff and Directors review and sign the organization's Conflict of Interest policy annually. The Board revisits the policy regularly to determine if any staff or Directors have an interest that could give rise to conflicts. If conflict of interest is suspected, the Board will hold a group discussion of the potential conflict without the Director or staff present, and will hold a vote. This is documented in Board meeting minutes.”
“The organization's Compensation Program establishes the organization's compensation philosophy and metrics for determining pay position within established salary bands. For salary bands, the organization sets the market median (50th percentile) as its targeted position, based upon equal weighting of three variables: (1) current year operating budget, (2) field of work, and (3) geographic region. Employees fall above, at, or below the median depending on fit within the experience, expertise, and performance Quartiles, and via annual performance reviews. Compensation for the organization's key employees - the Executive Director and the Program Manager - is determined through the Compensation Program's framework. Resettled to the US to a complex social landscape of language and cultural barriers, and persistent social exclusion, refugee youth face continuous barriers to participating in extracurricular and summer activities that affirm, uplift, or catalyze their natural leadership abilities. A small cohort of youth held summer placements, for a small stipend, at RCP to assist with programmatic activities, and to practice the skills of serving as bilingual accompaniment partners for their own neighbors. In addition to this cohort of four youth, 32 other young refugee students participated in trainings on cultural resiliency, community organizing, and self-inquiry throughout the summer. Feedback surveys demonstrated that this was the only refugee-specific leadership opportunity for young people, and was a space that they felt comfortable and safe in being amongst so many other young people that share similar experiences and social identities. |

When refugee women seek employment in the US, language barriers often exclude them from opportunities. Moreover, because many women in certain countries cannot participate in their culture's workforce, US-based employers perceive them as having few to no transferable work skills. Un- and under-employment of refugee women in the Triangle is high; yet, as their culture's keepers of food traditions, they hold mastered skills in traditional cuisine and cooking. Through collaborations with community partners, Traditional Kitchens offers a name under which refugee women can prepare their culture's traditional foods and share them with the broader community. Traditional Kitchens seeks to connect refugee food makers with the broader community through the sharing of home-cooked meals. In 2018, 3 refugee women prepared 8 different meals for local community events, serving over 600 community members. |
