Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the Vipassana Community Foundation (VCF) is to support and grow the teaching and practice of Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka throughout North, South and Central America. VCF's efforts aim to make Vipassana meditation courses more widely available to more people in the Americas.VCF partners with old students in the community who are interested in donating assets to be used over the long term to support the growth and teaching of Vipassana in more places, and to strengthen existing nonprofit Vipassana centers. Whether large or small, donations to VCF are tax-exempt, and over time these will accumulate into substantial endowment funds. The investment income from the funds will continue to benefit the community forever.A Board of Directors made up of senior Vipassana teachers oversees grantmaking to nonprofit Vipassana centers and Trusts in ways that are responsive to the needs of these community institutions and consistent with VCF's mission.

To promote the practice & tradition of Vipassana Meditation.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, line 2

In 2018, VCF raised a total of $558,895 in donations from individuals, foundations and 501c3 organizations. Additionally, in 2018 VCF awarded 9 grants totaling $304,042 to support Vipassana centers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. The greatest impact of VCF's efforts so far has been in Latin America, thanks to sizable donations from students especially interested in supporting new centers in that region where demand for Vipassana courses has been growing steadily. Since 2012, VCF has organized donations from old students and made significant grants to Vipassana Trusts to establish or expand Vipassana centers in Argentina, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela. Additionally, VCF has made considerable strides in supporting the land purchases and establishment of new centers in the Americas. In 2018 grants were made to the Bay Area Vipassana Center and Vancouver Island Vipassana Association to support the purchases of land for each of these new centers. This built on VCF's grantmaking in 2017, where VCF led the completion of a land purchase in Colorado and the donation of a property to the newly established Vipassana Association in Idaho. In 2018, VCF also continued the evolution of its formal strategic planning process that was originally launched in 2017. At its General Meeting held at Dhamma Siri, Texas in September 2018, the Board agreed on core strategic priorities for the year and continued to refine the vision and program offerings that VCF will endeavor to build out to better support the spread of dhamma.

IRS990/Desc0General ProgramsIn 2018, VCF continued to contribute to Latin American center expansion while also providing support for new centers in the Americas. Highlights of VCF's activities in 2018 include:Grant to the Cordoba Center for phase-2 construction: Dhamma Viriya (in Cordoba, Argentina) has been running non-center courses since 2001. In 2016 a group of old students donated a 22-hectare property to establish a center in Capilla del Monte (near Cordoba) which is the second official center in Argentina. Upon completing Phase-1 construction, Dhamma Viriya held its first 10-day course on March 22, 2017. In 2018 VCF awarded two grants totaling $56,000 to support Phase-2 construction which will expand the center to accommodate up to 50 students. Key aspects of the construction include: a new treatment for drinking water, a new ceiling for the meditation hall, kitchen extensions, enclosed dining rooms, and renovated bathrooms.Grant to Vipassana Peru to support the kitchen/dining omplex: Asociacion Vipassana Peru has been conducting non-center courses since 1998 having conducted 86 10-day courses, 7 Satipatthana courses, and numerous one-day and three-day courses touching 1000s of individuals. In 2018, Asociacion Vipassana Peru began construction of Dhamma Suriya, which is located 45 minutes outside of Lima. The land for Dhamma Suriya was donated by an old student. The center, upon completion of construction, is anticipated to initially serve 80 students. VCF's grant in 2018 of $90,000 will go towards Stage-1 construction supporting the build-out of a kitchen/dining room. Remaining Stage 1 areas of focus include: building housing for students and servers, construction of the meditation hall and perimeter wall, as well as building out electrical/water/sanitation. Grant to Vipassana Chile for phase-2 Construction: In 2011, with the idea of building the first Vipassana Meditation Center in Chile, Vipassana Chile purchased land close to Santiago. With a $20,000 grant made by VCF in 2014 along with other donations, Phase-1 construction was completed, which included: an access road, installing a fence, and developing structures that have been used for meditation and accommodation. In 2018 VCF made a follow-on grant of $90,000 to support the completion of Phase-2 construction. This grant will go towards funding: a water well, purchasing underground water rights, building a multi-purpose dome (that would serve as the meditation hall), installing two communal toilets, and funding of the Manager's house.Grants to support the press of course applications in Latin America: With the continuing establishment and growth of new Vipassana centers throughout Latin America, there is an almost overwhelming demand from students who want to attend courses. All course registration in Spanish and Portugese is handled by teams of trained registrars at the centers in Massachusetts, USA, and at Dhamma Viriya, Cordoba, Argentina. VCF continued in 2018 to support this critical effort by a series of three grants. Two ($10,000 total) went to the central registration effort at Dhamma Dhar, Massachusetts, and one ($3542) to Dhamma Viriya, Cordoba.New centers in the Americas: With its intention of supporting the launch of new centers also in North America, VCF made two donations in 2018 in this regard. Both donations were sparked by the specific interests of individual donors. The first was a $50,000 dollar grant to the Bay Area Vipassana to support the purchase of a property that will become the location of the new center that will be called Dhamma Santosa. The second was a pooled donation from several donors of $4,500 to support the purchase of developed property where the center on Vancouver Island, Dhamma Modana, has been relocated.

Completion of Grant: Upon completion of the grant, the Board receives a final grant report. This report provides a financial breakdown of how the funds have been used along with any relevant narrative and pictures to show use of grant funds (i.e. picture of the new Meditation Hall that was built, etc.)

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0In 2018, VCF raised a total of $558,895 in donations from individuals, foundations and 501c3 organizations.
