SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, TECHNICAL SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: Bishop Lawi Imathiu Secondary School (BLISS) is a day public school that serves the poorest families in the community that cannot afford the predominant boarding school system in Kenya. 2024 enrollment was 678. BLISS is considered a high-performing school, based on student performance on their National Exam. Scholarships were provided for over one-third of current secondary students to enable disadvantaged, young people to overcome economic barriers to completing secondary school. ($17,028)................ SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POST_SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION AT UNIVERSITY: Granted 10 university academic scholarships for top-performing BLISS graduates (including both top male and female students). ($3,835)............... KUEF SCHOLARS PROGRAM for deserving students to receive post-secondary, vocational, technical or university education in 2-4 year programs without regard to academic ranking. 19 students participated in the program for 2024. ($7,154)................ GIRLS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP for deserving female students at university based on scholastic aptitude and potential to significantly impact the community and world. GIRLS EDUCATION PERIOD PROGRAM Removed barriers to education for young women in rural Kenya. The program supports female students by creating girl-friendly school environments by providing sanitary pads, underwear, tuition support, female health education, and adequate toilets. The program currently supports over 715 female students at 5 schools in Kithoka, a small village in Meru, Kenya. Total GRANTS: $7,820........................ FEEDING PROGRAM FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS Provide morning porridge for over 650 students at Gichunge Primary and Kithoka Primary Schools each school day by KUEF's partners. Grants to the Feeding Programs at Kithoka Primary and Gichunge Primary Schools were essential in the battle to fight malnutrition which was made worse by the severe drought Kenya experienced in 2023. ($4,105)................. BLISS (secondary school) grant for supplemental food material for the School Lunch Program (over 678 students) due to school garden crop failure. ($2,621)...................... TOTAL FEEDING GRANTS: $6,726.............. SECONDARY SCHOOL PROGRAM SUPPORT Additional Science Lab improvements to provide gas piping were completed in 2024. ($5,366).......... The School Band Music program was supported in interschool competitions in part at the local, regional, and national levels. ($1,160)............. TOTAL SCHOOL PROGRAM GRANTS: $6,526............ COMMUNITY SUPPORT Mwanika Church is the center of many community-based programs and was supported as it rebuilt its facility. BISHOP LAWI IMATHIU SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER AND STAFF SUPPORT The Kenyan government was unable to make school operating payments due to a faltering economy. This leaves families the burden of covering school operating costs when those living in acute poverty can least afford it. The high cost of food and fuel imports, high inflation, and the effects of climate change on harvests have created extreme hardships for Kenyan people.
