Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The tax returns are prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined by the vp of finance and the finance committee. The organization distributes copies of the complete returns to the board of directors. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped with certified return receipt and timely placed in the mail for filing, or the form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

All officers and directors are required to sign a conflict of interest policy each year.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The board confers annually on the compensation of key employees and determines pay based on the organization's standing, the compensation levels at comparable organizations, and key employees' performance.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19: Other Organization Documents Publicly Available

Governing documents are available for public inspection at the principal place ofbusiness. The conflict of interest policy and the organization's financial statements are available upon request.

IRS990/Desc0THE PAST YEAR HAS BEEN AN EXCITING TIME OF GROWTH AND PROGRESS, AND WERE THRILLED TO SHARE THE FOLLOWING HIGHLIGHTS: (1) OUR CORE FELLOWSHIP IS PROVIDING A TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS AND OUR ALUMNI ARE THRIVING IN COLLEGE AND BEYOND. THE FELLOWS IN OUR 2015-16 COHORT EXPERIENCED A TRANSFORMATIVE YEAR IN BRAZIL, ECUADOR, INDIA, OR SENEGAL, DURING WHICH THEY DEVELOPED GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, PASSION, AND PURPOSE THAT HAS LAUNCHED THEIR JOURNEY AS LEADERS AND GLOBAL CITIZENS. THREE FELLOWS WERE AWARDED GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE END OF THEIR BRIDGE YEAR, AND ALUMNI HAVE RECENTLY BEEN CHOSEN AS FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS, DAVIS PEACE PRIZE WINNERS, TEACH FOR AMERICA CORPS MEMBERS, AND PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS. MOREOVER, EMERGING EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT OUR 450 ALUMNI ARE THRIVING IN COLLEGE AND EARLY CAREERS. NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF ALL ALUMNI AND 91 PERCENT OF ALUMNI FROM LOW-INCOME BACKGROUNDS ARE PERSISTING IN OR HAVE GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE, 95 PERCENT SAY THAT GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR WAS THE BEST PREPARATION THEY COULD HAVE HAD FOR COLLEGE, AND 91 PERCENT RETURN PROFICIENT IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. (2) WE RECRUITED THE LARGEST COHORT IN GLOBAL CITIZEN YEARS HISTORY. AFTER LAUNCHING A NEW ON-THE-GROUND RECRUITMENT STRATEGY AND STRENGTHENING DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT IN 2015, WE SAW A 64 PERCENT INCREASE IN APPLICATIONS. WE WERE THRILLED TO WELCOME 114 OUTSTANDING YOUNG LEADERS INTO OUR 2016-17 COHORT THIS FALL 30% GROWTH FROM LAST YEARS GROUP. WE ACCOMPLISHED THIS RECORD INCREASE WHILE MAINTAINING OUR UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO ACCESS AND DIVERSITY: 45 PERCENT OF OUR FELLOWS IDENTIFY AS PEOPLE OF COLOR, 47 PERCENT ARE LOW-INCOME AND ELIGIBLE FOR PELL GRANTS AND 80 PERCENT RECEIVED SOME LEVEL OF NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID. THIS YEAR GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR WILL PROVIDE OVER $2M IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO MAKE OUR FELLOWSHIP ACCESSIBLE FOR LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. (3) WE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED A NEW PROGRAM IN INDIA, THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH TEACH FOR INDIA (TFI). OUR INDIA FELLOWS WERE PLACED AS TEACHING ASSISTANTS IN HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS WITH TEACH FOR INDIA MENTORS AND TFI HAS REQUESTED MORE FELLOWS IN THE YEARS AHEAD, A KEY SIGNAL THAT OUR FELLOWS ARE ADDING VALUE IN THE CLASSROOM. (4) WE ARE FORGING INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH COLLEGES, HIGH SCHOOLS, AND COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAMS TO BETTER INTEGRATE THE BRIDGE YEAR INTO STUDENTS EDUCATIONAL TRAJECTORIES. OUR 2015-16 PROGRAM INCLUDED THE FIRST COHORT OF TUFTS UNIVERSITYS 1+4 FELLOWS, WHO TAKE A TUFTS-SPONSORED BRIDGE YEAR BEFORE COMPLETING FOUR YEARS ON CAMPUS. (5) WE HAVE HELPED SHAPE A NATIONAL CONVERSATION ABOUT BRIDGE YEARS. IN MAY 2016, WHEN MALIA OBAMA MADE A PUBLIC DECISION TO TAKE A BRIDGE YEAR BEFORE COLLEGE, GLOBAL CITIZEN YEARS MODEL AND POINT OF VIEW WERE FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE WASHINGTON POST, AND NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO, AMONG OTHER OUTLETS. IN JUNE, FOUNDER/CEO ABBY FALIK WAS NAMED ONE OF THE 100 MOST CREATIVE PEOPLE IN BUSINESS BY FAST COMPANY. THIS SUMMER, KATIE COURIC FEATURED GLOBAL CITIZEN YEARS INNOVATIVE MODEL AS A PATHWAY FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE SOCIOECONOMIC SPECTRUM. AND THIS FALL, GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR PARTICIPATED IN THE LAUNCH OF THE SERVICE YEAR ALLIANCE, AN EFFORT TO MAKE A YEAR OF SERVICE A NEW RITE OF PASSAGE FOR YOUNG AMERICANS.

IRS990/MissionDesc0GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR IS ON A MISSION TO MAKE AN IMMERSIVE, GLOBAL "BRIDGE YEAR" AFTER HIGH SCHOOL A NEW RITE OF PASSAGE FOR TODAY'S EMERGING LEADERS. EACH YEAR WE RECRUIT AND TRAIN A DIVERSE CORPS OF "FELLOWS" AND PLACE THEM AS APPRENTICES IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS LATIN AMERICA, AFRICA AND ASIA. THROUGH A MIX OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND WORLD-CLASS TRAINING, OUR FELLOWS DEVELOP THE GLOBAL SKILLS AND SAVVY NEEDED TO LEAD ACROSS COUNTRIES, CULTURES AND SECTORS. NEARLY 100% OF FELLOWS TRANSITION DIRECTLY TO COLLEGE AFTER THEIR GLOBAL CITIZEN YEAR AND EXCEL AS LEADERS AND CHANGEMAKERS ON CAMPUS.
