The research institute of deaconess clinic assists deaconess clinic's more than 100 physicians, as well as other physicians throughout the community in gaining access to leading edge medical science and new treatments for acute and chronic illnesses. The institute was awarded 44 new and expanded clinical research grants this year to study investigational drugs and devices across 11 fields of medicine including heart disease, cancer, allergy and immunology, diabetes, urological disorders, depression, arthritic conditions, and dermatological disorders. The new research grants provided treatment opportunities and preventative health services for up to 521 patients. More than 250 patients were enrolled into clinical trials throughout the year, resulting in 4,261 research related patient visits. The research institute also launched the exploration of a number of investigator-initiated research projects in support of medical advancements including, but not limited to: the early detection of bladder cancer; the reduction of sepsis in patients undergoing trans-rectal prostate biopsies; the treatment of carpal tunnel pain; the long term efficacy of histerlin abdominal implants in patients with prostate cancer; and the cost of using donor human milk in premature newborns. The institute oversaw training of nine new clinical investigators, in 2012, including their research certifications through the national institute of health in good clinical practice and the protection of human subjects.
