IRS990/Desc01 Continued to manage and grow the BioInspire medical device incubator accelerator in partnership with the City of Peoria, Arizona. BioAccel identified companies to add to the portfolio with the goal of having them take residence in the local incubator. In the coming year as the BioAccel contract with the City of Peoria enters its fifth and final year. Bioaccel will begin discussions internally and with its Council of Advisors about instituting a plan to refocus its efforts back onto the core mission of early stage company funding and support statewide. The original mission did not include incubator creation and management or significant efforts with individual Cities. The planned refocus of operations provides a stronger platform for BioAccel to assist all incubator programs, entrepreneurs and technology transfer activities across Arizona. 2 BioAccel expanded its efforts with the local community to improve the early stage investment ecosystem in Arizona which is very helpful to the portfolio companies entering BioInspire and BioAccel programs. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BioAccel, completed its first year of academic programming funded by a two year, 499,010 federal innovation i6 grant from the Economic Development Agency EDA in the U.S. Department of Commerce. BioAccel received their first grant from the Economic Development Agency to work with two universities to provide commercialization training to biomedical engineering students and faculty in an effort to increase the commercialization of government funded research, and improve workforce development. Arizona State University and the University of California, Irvine were chosen as partners and a comprehensive training program was designed and implemented as part of the formal academic training for students. The initial outcomes of the program are impressive and the activities have added to the comprehensive nature of BioAccel programs. EDA reported that due to the new medical device teambuilding capstone course, UCI has seen a 600 percent. This new grant also diversifies BioAccel financial portfolio.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0BioAccel executed the 2nd Annual Solutions Challenge fund raising and early stage ecosystem development event, making it bigger and better than its initial event. The initial year costs were covered while in 2015 all cost plus a profit were realized. In 2015 BioAccel worked with local industry to identify unmet health needs and then seek solutions to these problems. This year, 2 of the 4 Challenge Categories had unmet needs identified and sponsored by local industry including WL Gore and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. Industry sponsorship of the categories also included Ulthera and Molded Devices. Additionally, the Arizona Board of Regents sponsored the event, along with Medtronic, to encourage technology transfer from the universities as well as to create a Student Category to further encourage hands on entrepreneurship. As part of this program, BioAccel gained the participation of six successful entrepreneurs to serve as Scorpion Investors willing to invest up to 50,000 in one or more of the finalist companies in which they felt worthy of investment. addl see sch O
