IRS990/Desc0Algae Industry Milestones in 2014In 2014 members of the Algae Biomass Organization influenced more markets, established more partnerships, built bigger networks and pushed technology advances farther than ever before within the algae industry. Some of the 2014 milestones that came of these efforts are list here. None would be possible without the dedicated outreach and support from ABO members that are developing new sources of fuels, nutritional ingredients, animal feeds, chemicals, plastics and everything else that can be produced without impacts on freshwater supplies or valuable agricultural lands: A new Farm Bill recognizes algaes potential Some of the support for algae in the Farm Bill signed in early 2014 includes: eligibility among algae farmers for USDA funding that helps establish and maintain algae crops; expansion of the Biorefinery Assistance Program beyond biofuels to include renewable chemicals and other biobased products; and insurance coverage for algae crops in the case of a natural disaster. The Department of Defense remains bullish on algae At the 2014 Algae Biomass Summit Dennis McGinn, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Energy, Installations & Environment cemented the undisputed national security advantage that comes from renewable, domestically produced algae-based fuels. He had one simple message from the Navy for algae biofuel producers: If you make algae-based fuels, the Navy will buy them. The Department of Energy doubles down on lowering the cost of algal biofuels Also at the 2014 Algae Biomass Summit David Danielson, Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy announced up $25 million in funding that will be targeted toward reducing the cost of algal biofuels to less than $5 per gasoline gallon equivalent by 2019.A wave of international partnerships show the global appeal of algae technology A number of agreements in 2014 illustrated the expanding sphere of the algae industry:An ABO and European Algae Biomass Association partnership that extended the member benefits of each organization, and agreements to work together to promote the industry globally. An off-take agreement between Cellana and Neste Oil, the worlds leading supplier of renewable diesel.A partnership between Sapphire Energy and Chinas Sinopec to validate and deploy algae cultivation technology in that country. An agreement between Heliae and Sincere Corp to build a commercial facility in Japan.Solazymes manufacturing plant come online in partnership with Brazils Bunge.Algae makes its mark in legislation The Algae Biomass Organization started 2014 with plans to increase the profile of recycling carbon dioxide emissions into useful products, something algae companies can do exceedingly well. ABO and its members asked the EPA to include carbon capture and utilization (CCU) in its Clean Power Plan, opened facilities for tours with elected officials and told the story of algaes role in the climate change fight wherever we could. Within months, CCU was included in climate legislation proposed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, members of the Congressional Algae Caucus voiced support for the idea, and Senators from both sides of the isle visited ABO member facilities to see first hand the potential. During one visit, after seeing BioProcess Algaes production capabilities, greenhouse gas utilization and economic potential Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia commented, This is whats its all about! Dozens of technology advances, new markets for products like algal Omega-3 supplements, or investments in equipment and workforce were made by ABO members across the board. If you are not yet a member of ABO this is the perfect time to come aboard. We know there is still work to be done, but with the broad support we have built so far, the rest of the journey will not be done alone.
