Water stewardship, inc. (wsi) is an independent science-based nonprofit whose mission is to strengthen private and public sector efforts to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution of rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Wsi strives to improve water quality while also maintaining and enhancing agricultural profitability.agricultural operations are a major contributor to poor water quality. Water stewardship provides services to strengthen private and public sector efforts to reduce nutrient and sediment pollution of rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Water stewardship has provided outreach services mostly to small-medium sized farmers in assessing the current level of best-management practice implementation and developing voluntary continuous improvement plans to reduce farm water quality impacts. Water stewardship also provides independent policy advice particularly with respect to quantifying the efficiencies of best-management practices.

THESE PLANS, WHEN IMPLEMENTED, WILL RESULT IN REDUCTIONS IN NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS LOSSES TO LOCAL WATERS AND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AT LEVELS NEEDED FROM AGRICULTURE REGIONALLY TO RESTORE THE HEALTH OF THE BAY. WATER STEWARDSHIP ALSO DEVELOPED A SOFTWARE TOOL THAT ALLOWS ESTIMATION OF THE IMPACT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SPECIFIC BEST PRACTICES IN BOTH AGRICULTURE AND URBAN SETTINGS THAT ALLOWS FARMERS AND DEVELOPERS TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY OF REDUCING THEIR IMPACT ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. WE ALSO DEVELOPED A TRAINING MANUAL TO ACCREDIT CONSERVATION ASSESSMENT PROFESSIONALS TO HELP CONDUCT ASSESSMENTS AND IMPLEMENT OUR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PLANS. THIS WILL ALLOW THE WATER STEWARDSHIP APPROACH TO VERIFIED CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT TO EXPAND THROUGH SUBCONTRACTING THESE CONSERVATION ASSESSMENT PROFESSIONALS TO DO WORK ON OUR BEHALF SO THAT WE CAN EXPAND AND "SCALE-UP" OUR PROGRAM WITHOUT GREATLY INCREASING STAFF. DURING THIS TIME PERIOD, WE COMPLETED THE BETA TEST OF OUR PROCEDURES AND PROTOCOLS FOR VERIFIED CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND EVALUATED AND REFINED THEM BASED ON BETA TEST RESULTS. THIS ALLOWED US TO MOVE INTO AN OPERATIONAL SCALE PILOT PROGRAM TO BETTER DETERMINE THE NEEDS, COSTS, AND BENEFITS OF OUR UNIQUE APPROACH.
