Activity 2

Modern Day Slavery - In 2012, Humanity Uniteds program service regarding modern-day slavery fell into three main categories of activity. First, Humanity United continued to focus on building the U.S. anti-slavery movement by facilitating collaboration among U.S.-based organizations working on this issue. Throughout 2012, Humanity United facilitated regular meetings of a broad range of organizations to work collectively on several projects as the Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST). In addition to convening and managing the coalition, Humanity United also provided financial support to all coalition members. Second, Humanity United continued to develop and advance our anti-slavery strategy and to engage in grantmaking to promote greater corporate engagement in addressing forced labor in multinational supply chains. Emphasis of the work focused on the continued exploitation of labor deep in the supply chains of commodities such as gold, shrimp and palm oil. Finally, Humanity United continued to deepen its work in Nepal, through direct engagement and grantmaking, with a particular emphasis on eradicating slavery in Nepals brick kilns and by reducing the risks for Nepalese migrant workers who emigrate to the Persian Gulf countries.

Activity 3

Liberia/West Africa and Other Program Services: In 2012, Humanity Uniteds grantmaking program in regards to preventing mass atrocities in Liberia/West Africa focused on three primary areas: developing the capacity of local public and non-profit institutions to contribute to good governance, rule of law, and citizen participation in their own governance; promoting early identification of genocidal conflict risks and information sharing among local stakeholders to address these risks; and supporting efforts to improve the investment environment in order to stimulate job creation and thereby create a peace dividend.
