The mission of access youth, inc. Is to provide at-risk youth with access to the skills, systems, and support they need to stay in school and out of the criminal justice system. We currently work to curb the school-to-prison at three key intervention points: when student behavior puts them at risk of suspension, when students begin to exhibit truancy, and when students are arrested by the police for first-time low-level offenses. Access youth is unique in our programming, approach, and results. We are the longest-running diversion program in the district of columbia and the only nonprofit partnering with district of columbia public schools (dcps) to reduce truancy at the high school level and the only nonprofit helping dcps provide high school students with alternatives to out of school suspension.

| IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom | 0 | ACCESS Inc.'s goals are to: reduce the number of DC youth in contact with the juvenile justice system; reduce recidivism rates; decrease truant behavior and increase pro-social behaviors through targeted, early-intervention and prevention-based programs. We provide at-risk youth with programming and resources to prevent them in coming in contact with the juvenile justice system and open their minds to alternatives to delinquent behavior and positive life choices. For juveniles who have been arrested and come in contact with the juvenile justice system, ACCESS offers an alternative to court and incarceration, ensuring that juveniles connect their criminal or harmful actions with consequences and accountability where they are held accountable and take responsibility for their actions. We currently offer four programs: 1. COMMUNITY SERVICE: ACCESS strives to set up meaningful community service activities in order to give youth a sense of civic engagement and responsibility on behalf of their own community. DCPS recognizes the benefits of community service and all students are required to complete 100 hours of community service in order to graduate. Since, at-risk youth in the District may lack essential resources to identify appropriate community service opportunities, ACCESS launched its community service program. We have secured partnerships with community-based organizations throughout the city that match the needs and interests of our youth and provide an array of community service opportunities. We assist juveniles in finding, securing, and completing their community service hours by documenting appropriate organizations for juveniles; managing the community service referral process; and monitoring service hours. 2. LIFE SKILLS: Life skills classes have been proven to increase pro-social behavior and reduce delinquency and violence. Our life skills classes teach alternatives to violence and crime; create a safe environment for personal reflection; and address academic improvement and truancy issues. We also engage participants in conversations and activities about self-awareness, problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, coping with stress, coping with emotions, communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills. Juveniles may self-select to participate in LSP, or attend as a component of their mediation agreement. 3. FAMILY STRENGTHENING: In response to parental and guardian needs, ACCESS offers a strengths-based, solution-focused program that is founded on the belief that families are the experts of their own situations, and need support to discover their strengths and possible solutions. ACCESS follows a home-based visitation model where we conduct home visits, meeting families in their own homes within their own communities to develop goals and plans. Activities may include: working with DCPS to reinstate their child in school following a short or long-term suspension; discussing initial goals and plans with the family; preparing a family development plan and monitoring the plan. Research strongly suggests that family-strengthening programs have a positive impact on the following four parenting processes:1) family and home environment; 2) parenting skills; 3) parent-child relationships, and;4) family involvement in home- and school-based learning. All of these factors have been established as inversely related to violence and youth gang-involvement. 4. JUVENILE VICTIM OFFENDER MEDIATION: ACCESS is the sole source for juvenile victim-offender mediation in D.C. and is also the only diversion program serving juveniles that require parental/legal guardian participation for every session. Diversion occurs when youth are referred to mediation as an alternative to court and incarceration. Effective diversion programs hold offenders accountable for offenses take steps to repair the damage caused by their actions and give juvenile offenders the opportunity to understand that their actions have consequences for whi |
