Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of ACCESS Youth, Inc., (ACCESS) is to provide at-risk youth with access to the skills, systems and support they need to stay in school and out of the criminal justice system. We currently work to curb the school-to-prison at three key intervention points - when student behavior puts them at risk of suspension, when students begin to exhibit truancy, and when students are arrested by the police for first-time, low-level offenses. ACCESS is unique in our programming, approach and results. We are the longest-running diversion program in the District of Columbia, the only nonprofit partnering with DCPS to reduce truancy at the high school level, and the only nonprofit helping DCPS pr suspensions provide high school student with alternatives to out-of-school suspension.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Access youth envisions an equitable education system where all students obtain the academic and emotional support, they need to achieve their highest potential. Our mission is to keep vulnerable youth in school and out of the justice system through mediation, restorative justice, and positive youth development. Our vision is to lead the way in shifting the school community culture away from zero-tolerance policies that further disenfranchise minority students, and towards a more restorative justice-based approach, which has the long-term effect of disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline and ensuring that every student graduates from high school. Access youth was founded in 2009 because we saw too many youth of color thrust into the juvenile justice system often for low-level, first-time offenses. We were driven to build a more equitable system for these young people and empower them to avoid arrests that would drastically push them off course and keep them trapped in cycles of poverty and violence. Our goal has always been and remains to disrupt the systemic inequities that pervade the lives of our youth of color.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

Ayi is required to assess whether it is more likely than not that a tax position will be sustained upon examination on the technical merits of the position assuming the taxing authority has full knowledge of all information. If the tax position does not meet the more likely than not recognition threshold, the benefit of that position is not recognized in the financial statements. Ayi has determined there are no amounts to record as assets or liabilities related to uncertain tax positions.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE MISSION OF ACCESS YOUTH, INC. IS TO PROVIDE AT-RISK YOUTH WITH ACCESS TO THE SKILLS, SYSTEMS AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO STAY IN SCHOOL AND OUT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. WE CURRENTLY WORK TO CURB THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON AT THREE KEY INTERVENTION POINTS: WHEN STUDENT BEHAVIOR PUTS THEM AT RISK OF SUSPENSION, WHEN STUDENTS BEGIN TO EXHIBIT TRUANCY, AND WHEN STUDENTS ARE ARRESTED BY THE POLICE FOR FIRST-TIME LOW-LEVEL OFFENSES. ACCESS YOUTH IS UNIQUE IN OUR PROGRAMMING, APPROACH AND RESULTS.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0ACCESS YOUTH ENVISIONS AN EQUITABLE EDUCATION SYSTEM WHERE ALL STUDENTS OBTAIN THE ACADEMIC AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, THEY NEED TO ACHIEVE THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1THE PREPARED FORM 990 IS REVIEWED BY THE CHAIR AND THE TREASURER AS WELL AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BEFORE THE RETURN IS FILED BY THE IRS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2ANNUALLY THE MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNING BODY DETERMINE THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S COMPENSATION USING DATA PROVIDED BY THE CENTER OF NONPROFIT ADVANCEMENT ON COMPENSATION PAID BY COMPARABLE ORGANIZATIONS IN THE REGION FOR SIMILAR SERVICES.
