Mission

Our mission is to catalyze and strengthen a national network of citizen-powered groups who are building local resilience through community action. We will accomplish our mission by inspiring, encouraging, supporting, networking and training individuals and their communities as they consider, adopt, adapt, and implement the Transition approach to community empowerment and change.

Program Services

National Gathering and Movement Strategy Session: Our first Transition National Gathering took place in St. Paul, Minnesota from July 27th through July 30th, 2017. Included in this event were two days of intensive trainings, a public screening of the documentary film "Tomorrow," three keynote presentations, 43 workshops on various topics, bioregional breakouts, and Open Space sessions. 244 people attended the main conference, a total of 71 people engaged in six different pre-conference intensives, and 206 attended our community screening of the film "Tomorrow." In total, 63 individuals presented as part of this National Gathering. Recording of the sessions were viewed by 3,792 people. Approximately 1,500 volunteer hours were contributed in the process of planning, promoting, and hosting this Gathering. Total people served:4,313$0$72,323
Transition US offers the broad-spectrum support of direct assistance, resource coordination, mentoring, models and resources to Transition Initiatives and resilience-building efforts in all stages of development. Support is offered in the following ways: mentoring and coaching, linking groups/efforts to one another, discussion platforms, development of models and resources, and conference calls to enable Transition participants to meet and share knowledge in real time. Transition US also provides pathways for the movement to connect to more of itself and to engage in community action: 1) Bi-monthly newsletters filled with resources, tips, and stories from across the nation and around the world, 2) Website with numerous inspirational and solutions-oriented stories and resources, 3) various TeleSalons on topics pertinent to community leaders, 4) Collaborative Design Council founded to strengthen the US Transition Movement and increase resilience and interconnectedness among its members, and 5) Raising awareness through staff presentations at 17 local, regional, and national events to live audiences totaling 785 people. Training and Community Programs: Education and Training: Transition US supports the continued development and delivery of high quality education and training in support of the advancement of the transition movement in the USA. We do this through two-day on-site trainings, and skill-building TeleSeminars and Webinars. Transition US offers two different on-site courses: 1) Introductory "Launch" training that provides practical tools and know-how to set up, run, and grow a successful Transition Initiative; and 2) "Effective Groups" that is designed to provide leaders with the skills they need to create well-functioning teams. Transition US provides various skill- and capacity- building TeleSeminars/Webinars on such topics as community supported entrepreneurism, personal resilience, community rights, neighborhood-organizing and much more. During 2017 Transition US hosted and co-hosted 20 online trainings, discussions and events for 1,119 real-time participants and convened an additional 433 participants in 60+ movement strategy and National Gathering planning sessions. A total of 7,165 participants viewed our TeleSeminar/Webinar recordings in 2017. Community Programs include: 1) Transition Streets: Transition Streets engages near-neighbors in an action-oriented process to reduce their household energy, water, waste, and transportation miles (http://transitionstreets.org/). 2) Building Local Economies: In 2017, Transition US offered its first two-day intensive training on "Skilling Up for Local Economic Resilience". Twenty-three people attended the training and launched a US REconomy Community of Practice, a group that is stewarded by Transition US and meets virtually each month to share best practices and resources for building local economic resilience. 3) Stories to Action: In 2017 four allied organizations developed a program that provides community resilience models and projects for communities to implement pre- or post- disaster.
