“GAIN is a non-profit with a staff of 3 full-time employees, 1 part-time volunteer GAIN attorney, 2-3 legal externs and over 200 volunteer attorneys at any given time over the year. Our model is to train volunteer attorneys to accept and represent GAIN cases for immigrant victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault and asylum seekers pro bono (for free). GAIN screens and refers 85% of our cases to volunteer attorneys for pro bono representation. Our staff at GAIN accepts 15% of the cases for direct representation. Along with direct representation, our staff at GAIN trains, mentors and supervises the volunteer attorneys as they represent the cases that we have placed with them. This is a novel model of representation so that we can expand the number of cases that are represented and also empower volunteer attorneys to become educated in a legal issue or case that they may not have been exposed to. We make sure that attorneys represent our screened cases in a safe and supervised manner. Most of our volunteer attorneys are not immigration attorneys and therefore, their reliance upon GAIN staff for questions is large.”
