ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0I am writing to request forgiveness for the late filing of our 2020 990 Form for Adonai Employment. We have filed a paper 990 each year since I became the bookkeeper/Treasurer in 2009. We were unaware of the change requiring electronic filing. I mailed our completed paper 990 for the year 2020 to the IRS on May 16, 2021. In October I received a notice that our tax forms were not received, so I completed the form sent to me and included another copy of the form and re-mailed. Unfortunately, eventually both copies of the 2020 900 form were returned to me again along with a notice that required electronic filing. I then attempted to e-file the return using TaxAct. Unfortunately, the software informed me that I am was only able to e-file the currently due tax year (2021). I tried to call the IRS several times and couldn't get through to customer support. Finally on May 11, 2021, I was able to get through and spoke with the employee #100-400-79-11. He confirmed at that time it was not possible to e-file a past year 990 and said that I could fax the form along with a letter explaining the circumstances. Unfortunately, this fax was returned to me in February 2023 informing me that the form must be filed electronically. During the pandemic it was hard to keep track of changes with office closings/working from home, etc. We were unable to e-file due to the mailing of the returns back and forth and not understanding why they were being returned. We are a small nonprofit organization that helps individuals with disabilities find jobs. Any fines/penalties will detract from our mission and reduce the number of individuals we are able to help. During 2021 we also experienced the death of our founder and president, Thomas Gautheir, which caused additional burdens on the organization to continue to fulfill our mission. We respectfully request that the penalties for the late return be waived. We are fortunate to now have the technology and knowledge to complete all future filing on time by e -file.
