“Voz is a worker-led organization that empowers diverse day laborers and immigrants to improve their working conditions and protect civil rights through leadership development, organizing, education and economic opportunity. Voz operates the mlk jr. Worker center, which connects hundreds of portland day laborers per month to local employers. Voz offers skills, health, safety, arts, culture, advocacy, and leadership development workshops to over 300 day laborers per year.”

“1. Worker center for day laborers and domestic workers since 2008, the voz worker center has provided a safe, supportive space where day laborers and domestic workers connect with jobs and community resources. In 2024, the center dispatched 1,748 jobs with 540 employers, averaging 22.96/hour, and connected 254 workers to economic opportunities. Voz has grown into a multilingual hub serving speakers of at least 12 languages from latin america, africa, and south asia. We also deepened partnerships that connect work with cultural and ecological stewardship, such as our collaboration with the native gathering garden in cully park, where workers learn indigenous land care practices while fostering cross- cultural solidarity. Through our portland community college accredited green workforce training in irrigation and landscaping, 25 members graduated in 2024, with more than half securing full-time work in these industries. Voz also implemented climate-safe job dispatch protocols, ensuring workers safety during extreme heat and wildfire smoke. Key partnerships: native gathering gardens; east multnomah soil and water conservation district?; and portland community college”

“2. Leadership and education program vozs leadership and education program empowers members to lead campaigns, share knowledge, and shape community priorities. Our day laborer committee (dlc) facilitates monthly assemblies that drive political education, decision-making, and mobilization. In 2024, members participated in disaster preparedness workshops, and worker safety and environmental justice education. The emergency preparedness cohort trained 10 leaders in first aid, emergency response, and climate readiness, while also helping voz define our organizational environmental justice framework. As a worker-led organization, voz also piloted a new leadership model where one member took a hands-on role, co-leading our dispatch program for a month. Members advanced leadership beyond oregon - four voz leaders (including two youth) joined ndlons national asamblea in new york, returning to lead visioning sessions at voz. We strengthened partnerships with community allies, including pueblo unido, to support immigrant rights and help workers navigate the asylum process. With these efforts, voz is ensuring that immigrant workers are recognized as essential leaders in building a just, climate-resilient, and immigrant-affirming future.”
