Mission

Central square theater, the oldest female-led theater organization in greater boston, is an innovator in the non-profit arts field in collaborative leadership. Cst engages over 35,000 people annually through live performance, rigorous youth education, and community. Cst works closely with mit on catalyst collaborative@mit (cc@mit), one of the only nationwide partnerships between a world class research institute and a professional theater. Cc@mit creates and presents plays that deepen public engagement with science, while providing creative and emotional experiences not available in other forms of dialogue about science.

TI-JEAN AND HIS BROTHERS, BY NOBEL LAUREATE DEREK WALCOTT, WAS STAGED AS A CELEBRATION OF HAITI, A CO-PRODUCTION WITH THE AWARD-WINNING BOSTON PLAYWRIGHTS' THEATER, AND A COLLABORATION WITH HAITIAN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND THE CAMBRIDGE PEACE COMMISSION. CATALYST COLLABORATIVE@MIT BROUGHT BREAKING THE CODE, THE DEEPLY MOVING STORY OF BRITISH MATHEMATICIAN ALAN TURING. THERE IS RENEWED INTEREST IN THE CENTRAL ROLE TURINGS IDEAS HAVE PLAYED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPUTER AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, AND IT WAS ONLY IN 2009 THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT OFFERED AN APOLOGY FOR THE WAYS TURING WAS MISTREATED AFTER WWII BECAUSE OF HIS HOMOSEXUALITY. COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION PROGRAM: URTBESIDES BEING A COMPANY IN-RESIDENCE AT THE CENTRAL SQUARE THEATER, UNDERGROUND RAILWAY THEATER MAINTAINS A RIGOROUS EDUCATION PROGRAM, WORKING WITH BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN MANY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. UNDERGROUND RAILWAY THEATERS EDUCATION PROGRAM OFFERED FOUR WIDE-RANGE PROGRAMS THIS SEASON: PAGE TO STAGE, IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY; YOUTH UNDERGROUND, RESIDENT TEEN ENSEMBLE; CLASSES @ CST WITH A FAMILY PERFORMANCE SERIES; AND THE SCHOOL MATINEE PROGRAM. STUDENTS SERVED WERE AGES 6 - 18 AND CAME FROM DIVERSE SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS, FROM CAMBRIDGE, SOMERVILLE, BOSTON, AND ARLINGTON. APPROXIMATELY 650 STUDENTS ATTENDED THE SCHOOL MATINEE PROGRAM AND OVER 200 STUDENTS DIRECTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE CORE PROGRAMS.THE NORA THEATRE COMPANY, INC.:IN 2010-2011 THE NORA THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTED A SEASON OF REBELS AND RENEGADES, THOSE WHO ARE COMPELLED TO SEARCH IN NEW DIRECTIONS FOR DEEPER MEANING IN THEIR WORK AND IN THEIR RELATIONSHIPS. BEGINNING WITH EUGENE O'NEILS MASTERPIECE, A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN, MISFITS JOSIE HOGAN AND JIM TYRONE SENSE A KINSHIP IN EACH OTHERS BATTLE WITH LIFE, YET THEY FEINT AND SPAR WITH EACH OTHER, IN THIS MAGNIFICENT TALE OF LOVE AND REDEMPTION. TERRY JOHNSON'S MANIACALLY COMIC, HYSTERIA, OR FRAGMENTS OF AN ANALYSIS OF AN OBSESSIONAL NEUROSIS, BRINGS TOGETHER SURREALIST SALVADOR DALI AND FATHER OF PSYCHOLOGY SIGMUND FREUD, FIERCE INNOVATORS IN ART AND SCIENCE, PIONEERS WHO CHANGED FOREVER THE WAYS IN WHICH WE THINK. THE NORA'S SEASON CONCLUDED WITH A WORLD PREMIERE MUSICAL, SILVER SPOON, DRAWN FROM THE ACTIVISM AND FOLK IDIOM OF THE 1960'S. BOOK WRITER AMY MERRILL AND COMPOSER/LYRICIST SI KAHN INTRODUCED AUDIENCES TO TWO YOUNG PEOPLE FROM OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE TRACKS, DRAWN TOGETHER BY LOVE AND AN UNDENIABLE DRIVE TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD.IN LINE WITH ITS MISSION TO CHAMPION THE VOICE OF WOMEN, THE NORA THEATRE COMPANY STARTED LEADING LADIES, A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO ENGAGE DISENFRANCHISED WOMEN AND GIRLS IN THE TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCE OF LIVE THEATER THROUGH COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER GROUPS. FOR THREE YEARS THE COMPANY HAS BEEN COLLABORATING WITH GIRL TALK THEATRE, WHOSE MISSION IS TO EMPOWER POOR, HOMELESS, AND MARGINALIZED WOMEN THROUGH THE ART OF THEATER.
