Mission
Wildscreen USA is working to promote the public appreciation of biodiversity and the conservation of nature through the power of wildlife imagery. To this end, Wildscreen USA is spearheading U.S. efforts in support of the ARKive project - a unique global initiative gathering together the very best films and photographs of the world's species into one centralized digital library, to create a freely-accessible, audio-visual record of life on Earth. To this end, Wildscreen USA is coordinating work with leading media and environmental groups located in the U.S. and working with the U.S. educational sector and the American public to continue to grow ARKive's substantial U.S. audience.

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Wildscreen USA's main program is called ARKive, which is the ultimate multimedia guide to the world's threatened animals, plants and fungi. ARKive is a joint project between Wildscreen USA and our partner Wildscreen (UK). During the last year, additional species profiles have been created on ARKive, and the collection currently stands at over 100,000 photos and film clips of threatened species from around the world. Targeted campaigns have been used to raise environmental awareness amongst ARKive's users, and in February 2012 its Creative Climate Change Challenge was launched, a creative communications competition aimed at young people, highlighting the plight of animals and plants affected by climate change. More than 40,000 people are also engaging with ARKive through social media including Facebook and Twitter. These numbers increase daily. The success of our efforts in the social media arena has also been highlighted by ARKive's ranking of 22nd in the Social Brands 100, the definitive social ranking for brands. We are delighted that ARKive.org also won accolades of the Parents Choice Awards Foundation. ARKive's first mobile app, "Survival", was launched in November 2011. By March 2012 the app, packed with fascinating facts and stunning photos of the world's endangered species, and aimed at reaching younger users and their families, had been downloaded over 19,000 times. It subsequently won Best Education Mobile Application and Best Environmental Mobile Application in the 2012 MobileWebAwards, and was also recognized by the Parents Choice Awards Foundation. A pilot "Mobile Learning Biodiversity Quest" was conducted at Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, offering young people an innovative way to explore the biodiversity of the zoo. A mobile QR code pilot was also conducted with the Field Museum in Chicago. ARKive's participation at high profile education and science events has continued over the last year. Amongst these events were the National Science Teacher Association Conference, the Association for Science Technology Centers Conference, the Association for Zoos and Aquariums Conference, and many others. 10 new education resources have been published over the past year and more are in development. Wildscreen USA also collaborated with Discovery Creative to produce a public service announcement (PSA) encouraging Discovery Channel viewers to visit the ARKive website and learn more about the natural world. This PSA also aired on Chicago's WTTW Channel 11. Bringing further attention to the world's biodiversity, we launched a Species of the Day campaign in 2011 in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-US). Visitors to the WWF-US website were brought a different species from the ARKive collection each day, accompanied by facts and inspiring imagery. We have continued this campaign into 2012. |
