Mission

The kansas hispanic educational & development foundation is organized to promote educational and leadership advancement in the hispanic community through encouraging education through endowments and scholarships, assisting hispanic professionals with leadership experiances and assisting organizations with development of hispanic professionals.

Major Activities

Activity 2
In june 2012 the organization held the making the most of college leadership workshop. The one-day workshop provided 40 hispanic scholarhip recipients with the tools and resources needed to be successful in college.

PUBLIC SUPPORT ATTRACTION-THE FOUNDATION DOES MAINTAIN A CONTINUOUS AND BONA FIDE PROGRAM FOR SOLICITATION OF FUNDS FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND GENERAL COMMUNITY. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE FOUNDATION IN 2007 IT HAS ANNUALLY JOINTLY PARTICIPATED IN THE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE WICHITA HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, INC. A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE JOINT ANNUAL MEETING IS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FIRST YEAR HISPANIC COLLEGE STUDENTS. AT THE 2012 ANNUAL MEETING APPROXIMATELY 400 PEOPLE ATTENDED INCLUDING SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS. DURING THAT EVENT, ONE DONOR OFFERED TO MATCH UP TO $50,000 FOR CONTRIBUTIONS BY OTHER CONTRIBUTORS AT THAT EVENT. THIS DID CAUSE OTHER CONTRIBUTORS TO CONTRIBUTE THAT MIGHT NOT HAVE OTHERWISE MADE CONTRIBUTIONS. DURING 2012 THE FOUNDATION HAD AT TOTAL OF 47 CONTRIBUTORS WHICH IS GREATLY IN EXCESS OF THE PRIOR YEAR OF 2011 WHICH HAD A TOTAL OF 8 CONTRIBUTORS.THE FOUNDATION ALSO REGULARLY VISITS WITH POTENTIAL DONORS TO EXPLAIN THE PURPOSE OF THE FOUNDATION TO THEM AND TO SOLICIT CONTRIBUTIONS. DURING 2012 THE FOUNDATION WORKED ON AND THEN IN 2013 PUBLISHED IN COLORED PRINT AN ANNUAL REPORT ABOUT 2012 OPERATIONS AND ACTIVITIES. THIS REPORT IS TO BE USED IN FUND RAISING FROM DONORS.THE FOUNDATION ACTIVELY SEEKS OPPORTUNITIES TO SOLICIT CONTRIBUTIONS WITH OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. IN PAST YEARS THE FOUNDATION HAS WORKED ON COOPERATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS WITH WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY, THE URBAN LEAGUE OF KANSAS, THE KANSAS HEALTH FOUNDATION AND THE KANSAS LEADERSHIP CENTER AS PART OF ITS EXEMPT PURPOSE AND RAISE AWARENESS OF THE FOUNDATION TO SOLICIT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DONORS.ALTHOUGH THE FOUNDATIONS MAIN EFFORTS AT RAISING LARGER CONTRIBUTIONS ARE FOR THE PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIPS THE MEMBERSHIP DUES ARE LOW TO ENCOURAGE ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS. THE BY-LAWS PROVIDE THAT DUES ARE $500 ANNUALLY OR AS DETERMINED BY BOARD OF DIRECTORS. TO MAKE THE DUES AVAILABLE TO MORE MEMBERS THE DUES FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN AT $300. IN THAT ROLE, SHE WAS AN ACADEMIC ADVISER, WORKED IN ADMISSIONS, AND SERVED AS MINORITY STUDENT COORDINATOR. SHE ALSO COMPLETED WORK ON HER MASTERS IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN 1988. WHILE AT THE KENNEDY SCHOOL, SHE HELPED FOUND THE JOURNAL OF HISPANIC EDUCATION, A REPUTABLE RESOURCE FOR HISPANIC POLICY RESEARCH. SHE SERVED AS THE WICHITA REGIONAL COORDINATOR FOR THE LULAC EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER. IN ADDITION, SHE SERVES ON THE BUTLER COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES; ON THE GRANTS COMMITTEE, WICHITA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION AND IS CHAIR, SCHOOLS AND SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE, HARVARD UNIVERSITY.IRMA LUNA, FORMER INSTRUCTOR IN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM AND LEARNING CENTER INSTRUCTOR FOR USD 259 TO HELP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ADULTS OBTAIN THEIR GED DIPLOMAS. SHE WAS ALSO A LEADER AND TRAINER FOR SER CORPORATION AND WAS ADMISSIONS COUNSELOR FOR BUTLER COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
