Form 990, Part I, Line 1

Project akilah, inc. D/b/a akilah foundation's mission is to support educational opportunities that allow future leaders to champion opportunity and sustainability in solving the world's most pressing challenges. The akilah foundation provides professional and financial support to the akilah institute, which is east africa's pre-eminent tertiary institution for women's leadership and career development. The akilah institute has built a reputation for delivering high-quality, market-relevant education for young women, the majority of whom are from rural areas and the first in their families to attend college. After ten years of impact at the akilah institute, we have launched davis college, a global model of affordable, market-relevant higher education that prepares students for meaningful careers. While akilah will remain the women's institute at davis college, these educational opportunities are being expanded to include young men in 2020. Every element of davis college and akilah, including their unbundled faculty structure, technology, and lean infrastructure, is designed with an obsessive focus on affordability and access, creating opportunities for young people who wouldn't otherwise have them. Davis college is a unique hybrid of a liberal arts education, with a deep focus on critical thinking, creativity, articulate communication, and collaboration - with applied and technical curricula that equips students with valuable workforce skills. Davis college and akilah's blended and online competency-based diplomas and degrees offer a personalized education at a fraction of the cost of traditional private colleges, and provide access to an underserved market of students. Davis college and akilah's accredited diploma programs in information systems, business management and entrepreneurship, and hospitality management and ecotourism offer a radically different academic experience that incorporates fives key pillars -- 21st-century skills, personalized learning, innovation, ethical leadership, and sustainability - and they enable learners to address complex global challenges and launch meaningful careers.

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

This year, akilah celebrates 10 years of supporting an astounding number of critical innovations. Akilah has developed three accredited diplomas with proprietary curriculum, a technology platform to match students and graduates with career opportunities, a blended model that leverages adaptive learning tools, the launch of a professional development institute to train faculty in competency-based education and student-centered methodology, and most importantly, an empowering and nurturing campus culture that celebrates creativity, innovation, and servant leadership. The impact of the akilah foundation is rooted in our commitment to support educational initiatives that are both life-changing and affordable. In november 2019, akilah won the wise award from the qatar foundation for education innovation. Graduates are currently earning incomes that average 11 times the national median in rwanda. Eighty-six percent (86%) of graduates launch their careers within 6 months of graduation and are frequently recruited for coveted positions in diverse industries. Dozens of graduates have successfully started their own business in rwanda, employing hundreds of workers. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of these young women are the first to attend higher education institutions, and more than fifty percent (50%) of graduates come from rural areas. Thirty-three percent (33%) of graduates have received at least one promotion in position and/or salary since graduating and thirty-one percent (31%) of them are in a supervisory role. An akilah education also has a tangible impact on families and communities: eighty-one percent (81%) of graduates are supporting at least one individual or family member financially, and, on average, pay for school fees and healthcare for approximately two people in their families.

IRS990/Desc0SINCE THE OPENING OF AKILAH INSTITUTE IN 2010, THE AKILAH FOUNDATION HAS SUPPORTED EFFORTS THAT IMPROVE THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STANDING OF YOUNG WOMEN IN RWANDA. THROUGH THESE EFFORTS WE HAVE SEEN MORE THAN 2,500 STUDENTS GRADUATE AND GO ON TO PURSUE CAREERS IN HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. THESE OFFERINGS REPRESENT HIGH-GROWTH SECTORS IN EAST AFRICA. AKILAH'S UNIQUE MODEL LEVERAGES TECHNOLOGY, COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION, AND PERSONALIZED LEARNING TO OFFER A RADICALLY DIFFERENT ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE THAT PUTS GRADUATES ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A THREE-MONTH, FULL-TIME INTERNSHIP WITH ONE OF AKILAH'S PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERS. THE INTERNSHIPS TAKE PLACE AFTER STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THEIR TWO YEARS OF COURSEWORK, PROVIDING THEM WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THEIR SKILLS AND EASILY TRANSITION INTO FORMAL EMPLOYMENT. TO POWER ITS CAREERS DEPARTMENT, AKILAH USES MINDSKY, AN ONLINE CAREER PLATFORM AND JOB BOARD. STUDENTS ALSO WORK WITH AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR TO HONE THEIR CAREER NAVIGATION SKILLS AND SEARCH AND APPLY FOR POSITIONS ON THE PLATFORM. TO ENSURE THAT STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH THE REQUISITE ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SKILLS NEEDED TO SUCCEED IN THEIR COURSEWORK, AKILAH AND DAVIS HAVE INTRODUCED A SEVEN-WEEK INTRODUCTORY BRIDGE COURSE TO ACCLIMATE ALL STUDENTS TO THE RIGOR OF THE PROGRAM, AND TRANSITIONED COURSES TO COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION. AKILAH ALSO LAUNCHED THE ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN EITHER DAY OR EVENING AND WEEKEND COURSES. THESE CHANGES ALLOW STUDENTS TO MAINTAIN EMPLOYMENT WHILE THEY ARE STUDYING IF THEY CHOOSE, AND ALSO PURSUE A DIPLOMA IN A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME ENSURING THEY DO NOT FORGO VALUABLE EARNING OPPORTUNITIES - ALL NEEDS EXPRESSED BY STUDENTS AND GRADUATES SEEKING TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS. OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, AKILAH WILL TRANSITION TO A FULLY COMPETENCY-BASED, REGIONALLY-SPECIFIC, AND FULLY BLENDED MODEL, SERVING OVER 1,500 STUDENTS EACH YEAR. AKILAH AND DAVIS IS ALSO WORKING TO INTRODUCE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN RWANDA BY THE END OF 2021, AND IS ALSO LOOKING TO EXPAND TO OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT AFRICA AND ASIA.
