IRS990/Desc0IN 2017, AKILAH INSTITUTE ACCEPTED 348 STUDENTS INTO THE PROGRAM. OF THOSE STUDENTS, WE HAVE 321 STUDENTS THAT ARE GETTING READY TO GRADUATE IN NOVEMBER 2019. IN 2018, AKILAH INSTITUTE ACCEPTED 455 STUDENTS INTO THE PROGRAM. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 445 STUDENTS THAT ARE IN THE PROGRAM AND ARE SCHEDULED TO GRADUATE IN 2020. AKILAH INSTITUTE IS CURRENTLY SERVING A TOTAL OF APPROXIMATELY 766 STUDENTS AT THE KIGALI, RWANDA CAMPUS FOR THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR. FOR 2019, AKILAH INSTITUTE IS PROJECTING TO ACCEPT A CLASS OF APPROXIMATELY 586 STUDENTS, WHICH WILL BRING OUR TOTAL STUDENT COUNT TO OVER 1,000 STUDENTS ON CAMPUS.SINCE OPENING IN 2010, AKILAH HAS ALSO IMPROVED THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STANDING OF YOUNG WOMEN IN RWANDA AND HAS WELCOMED OVER 1,000 STUDENTS TO STUDY HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. ALL OF THESE OFFERINGS ARE HIGH-GROWTH SECTORS IN EAST AFRICA. AKILAH'S UNIQUE MODEL LEVERAGES TECHNOLOGY, COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION, AND PERSONALIZED LEARNING TO OFFER A RADICALLY DIFFERENT ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE THAT PUTS GRADUATES ON THE FAST TRACK TO SUCCESS. GRADUATES ARE CURRENTLY EARNING INCOMES THAT AVERAGE 12 TIMES THE NATIONAL MEDIAN IN RWANDA. NINETY PERCENT (90%) OF GRADUATES LAUNCH THEIR CAREERS WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF GRADUATION. THEY ARE RECRUITED FOR COVETED POSITIONS IN DIVERSE INDUSTRIES. DOZENS OF GRADUATES HAVE SUCCESSFULLY STARTED THEIR OWN BUSINESS IN RWANDA, EMPLOYING HUNDREDS OF WORKERS. EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) OF THESE YOUNG WOMEN ARE THE FIRST TO ATTEND HIGHER EDUCATION, AND MORE THAN FIFTY PERCENT (50%) OF GRADUATES COME FROM RURAL AREAS. FIFTY EIGHT PERCENT (58%) OF GRADUATES HAVE RECEIVED AT LEAST ONE PROMOTION IN POSITION AND/OR SALARY SINCE GRADUATING AND 36 PERCENT (36%) OF THEM ARE IN A SUPERVISORY ROLE. AN AKILAH EDUCATION ALSO HAS A TANGIBLE IMPACT ON FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES: NINETY PERCENT (90%) OF GRADUATES ARE SUPPORTING AT LEAST ONE INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY MEMBER FINANCIALLY, AND, ON AVERAGE, PAY FOR SCHOOL FEES AND HEALTHCARE FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO PEOPLE IN THEIR FAMILIES. THROUGH COURSEWORK, MENTORSHIP, EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE, STUDENTS DEVELOP THE AFOREMENTIONED SOFT SKILLS THAT GIVE THEM THE POWER AND CONFIDENCE TO TAP INTO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AND AFFECT POSITIVE CHANGE IN THEIR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A THREE-MONTH, FULL-TIME INTERNSHIP WITH ONE OF AKILAH'S PRIVATE SECTOR PARTNERS. THE INTERNSHIPS TAKE PLACE AFTER STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED THEIR TWO YEARS OF COURSEWORK, PROVIDING THEM WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THEIR SKILLS AND EASILY TRANSITION INTO FORMAL EMPLOYMENT. TO POWER ITS CAREERS DEPARTMENT, AKILAH USES MINDSKY, AN ONLINE CAREER PLATFORM AND JOB BOARD. STUDENTS ALSO WORK WITH A TALENT ADVOCATE TO HONE THEIR CAREER NAVIGATION SKILLS AND SEARCH AND APPLY FOR POSITIONS ON THE PLATFORM. STUDENTS RECEIVE A MINIMUM OF THREE TOUCHPOINTS, OR FIVE HOURS OF CONTACT, WITH A TALENT ADVOCATE. AKILAH SUCCESSFULLY CONDENSED ITS DIPLOMA PROGRAMS FROM THREE YEARS TO TWO, INTRODUCED A SEVEN-WEEK INTRODUCTORY BRIDGE COURSE TO ACCLIMATE ALL STUDENTS TO THE RIGOR OF THE PROGRAM, AND TRANSITIONED COURSES TO COMPETENCY-BASED EDUCATION. AKILAH ALSO LAUNCHED THE ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN EITHER DAY OR EVENING AND WEEKEND COURSES. THESE CHANGES ALLOW STUDENTS TO MAINTAIN EMPLOYMENT WHILE THEY ARE STUDYING IF THEY CHOOSE, AND ALSO PURSUE A DIPLOMA IN A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME ENSURING THEY DO NOT FORGO VALUABLE EARNING OPPORTUNITIES - ALL NEEDS EXPRESSED BY STUDENTS AND GRADUATES SEEKING TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS. OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, AKILAH WILL TRANSITION TO A FULLY COMPETENCY-BASED, REGIONALLY-SPECIFIC, AND FULLY BLENDED MODEL, SERVING OVER 1,500 STUDENTS EACH YEAR. AKILAH IS ALSO WORKING TO INTRODUCE A BACHELOR'S DEGREE PROGRAM IN RWANDA BY THE END OF 2020, AND IS ALSO LOOKING TO EXPAND TO OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS.
