IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0DURING 2017, THE FOUNDATION SUPPORTED TWO MAJOR ORGANIZATIONS WITH $25,000 GRANTS THAT FOCUS ON EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT AUSTIN, BUT SPECIFICALLY FOR THEIR WORK WITH EAST AUSTIN SCHOOLS.1. CREATIVE ACTION: CREATIVE ACTION AFTER SCHOOL IS A COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM THAT PLACES PROFESSIONAL TEACHING ARTISTS ON AUSTIN AREA CAMPUSES TO IMPLEMENT THEATRE AND ARTS-BASED CURRICULA THAT EXPLORES SOCIAL ISSUES, BUILDS SELF-ESTEEM, AND ENRICHES OUR STUDENTS' ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE. CREATIVE ACTION USED THE FOUNDATION'S FUNDIING TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MAPLEWOOD AND BLANTON ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TO ATTEND DAILY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING FOR FREE AND GREATLY REDUCED RATES. MANY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS SIMPLY PROVIDE A SAFE HAVEN AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, BUT CREATIVE ACTION AFTER SCHOOL GOES BEYOND THAT. TAUGHT BY PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS, CREATIVE ACTION AFTER SCHOOL HELPS YOUNG PEOPLE REALIZE THEIRFULL POTENTIAL BY: A. LEARNING CRITICAL LIFE SKILLS, INCLUDING LITERACY. EVERY CLASS FOSTERS HEALTHY COMMUNICATION, PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, AND CRITICAL THINKING. B. DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION. BY PARTICIPATING IN A VARIETY OF ARTS-BASED TECHNIQUES AND PROJECTS, STUDENTS EXPLORE SELF-EXPRESSION, CREATIVITY, AND IMAGINATIVE PLAY. C. BUILDING STRONGER SELF-ESTEEM. CREATIVE ACTION CREATE ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO FEEL CONFIDENT AND PROUD. D. EXPLORING AND ADDRESSING AGE-APPROPRIATE SOCIAL ISSUES. CREATIVE ACTION USES THEATRE AND THE CREATIVE ARTS TO ENGAGE YOUNG PEOPLE IN EXPLORING IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES IN THEIR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY.2. CAMPFIRE: THE TARGET POPULATION THIS GRANT FOCUSES ON IS MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO A LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN SCHOOL, TO DROPPING OUT, AND TOPERPETUATING CYCLES OF POVERTY. EXPERIENTIAL, OUT-OF-SCHOOL-TIME LEARNINGEXPERIENCES HAVE PROVEN TO ERADICATE A LACK OF CONFIDENCE IN LOW-INCOME YOUTH AND IMPROVE STUDENTS' ACADEMIC OUTCOMES. FURTHERMORE, THE TARGET POPULATION REPORTS GRADUATING WITH A LOW INTEREST IN PURSUING STEM-RELATED HIGHER EDUCATION/CAREERS,EVEN THOUGH THE PROFESSIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL SERVICES SECTOR IS THE MOST COMMON JOB SECTOR FOR AUSTIN-AREA MEN AND THIRD MOST COMMON FOR WOMEN. CAMP FIRE ADDRESSES THESE CRITICAL ISSUES BY DELIVERING EVIDENCE-BASED, HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT DIMINISHMISCONCEPTIONS OF STEM TOPICS/CAREERS, FOSTERS CONFIDENCE IN STUDENTS BOTHACADEMICALLY AND SOCIALLY, AND INCREASES INTEREST OF STEM IN LOW-INCOME YOUTH. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BLANTON, PECAN SPRINGS, AND RIDGETOP ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, CAMP FIRE HAS DESIGNED A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM PLAN, WHICH IS CUSTOMIZED TO FIT THE NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL AND THE BROADER MUELLER COMMUNITY. IT ALSO ALIGNS WITH CAMP FIRE'S PROGRAM GOAL OF PROVIDING ENOUGHPROGRAM HOURS PER DAY PER SITE TO SUPPORT A PROGRAM STAFF PERSON TO WORK 30HOURS/WEEK. CAMP FIRE PROPOSES FOR 2017 AND 2018 TO PROVIDE A SERIES OF ACTIVITIES, WHICH WILL ENGAGE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ON THEIR SCHOOL CAMPUSES, IN THEIR PARKS, AND OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS THE LIBRARY AND LOCAL BUSINESSES. THE "WATER FOR WILDLIFE" PROJECT OFFERS CONTACT HOURS WITH STUDENTS IN PROGRAMS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY AND DURING AFTERSCHOOL. ADDITIONALLY, THE PROGRAM OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR EACH COHORT TO PARTICIPATE IN ONE OFF-SITE LEARNING EXCURSION PER SEMESTER AND TO ATTEND AN END-OF-THE-SEMESTER SHOWCASE EVENT. BY HOSTING THESE UNIQUE PROGRAM OFFERINGS ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES AND IN MUELLER NEIGHBORHOODS, THE PROJECT IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE IN THE COMMUNITY AND ALLOWS CAMP FIRE PROGRAM STAFF TO WORK EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY WITH THE TARGETEDPOPULATION AND NEIGHBORHOOD.IN ADDITION, SMALLER GRANTS WERE AWARDED TO:- A LEGACY OF GIVING (01/19/17) - $1,000- FISTERRA PROJECTS (4/13/17) - $500- CHILDREN AT THE HEART (7/19/17) - $100- AUSTIN ED FUND (9/27/17) - $2,500- HELPING HAND HOME FOR CHILDREN (11/10/17) - $500
