Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The form 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm. Copies of the completed draft form 990 (including required schedules) will be distributed to the administrative/finance committee for review and approval. Any questions or concerns will be noted and addressed, with any necessary changes being incorporated in the form 990 as appropriate. The updated draft of the form 990 (including required schedules) will be distributed to every voting member of the board of directors prior to filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Each director, principal officer, committee member, and employee shall annually sign a statement which affirms such person: has received a copy of the conflict of interest policy, has read and understands the policy, has agreed to comply with the policy, and understands matthew 25 is charitable and in order to maintain its federal tax exemption it mush engage primarily in activities which accomplish one or more of its tax-exempt purposes. Matthew 25 also conducts periodic reviews to ensure compliance. Any conflicts that exist will be noted in the minutes. If a conflict does arise and it is appropriate a committee of disinterested persons may be established to investigate alternatives. If a more advantages transaction that does not cause a conflict of interest can be located through reasonable efforts it will be pursued as a viable option. The conflicted party will not vote on the conflicted transaction and will leave the meeting during any discussion on the topic.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Compensation of the executive director shall be periodically reviewed by the executive committee to determine whether compensation arrangements and benefits are reasonable, based on competent survey information, and the result of arm's length bargaining. Salary recommendations are taken to the board for approval. The review process was last completed in 2014. Form 990, part vi, section b, line 15b: there are no other compensated individuals that meet the definition of officer or key employee for purposes of the form 990, therefore this question has been answered no.

THE TWO-ACRE FARM IS LOCATED CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN CEDAR RAPIDS ON EMPTY LOTS THAT HAD HOUSES BEFORE THE 2008 FLOOD. THIS ONCE DEVASTATED AREA NOW PRODUCES FOOD AND HELPS BUILD COMMUNITY ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE AND IN GREATER CEDAR RAPIDS.IN OUR FISCAL YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2014, OUR CULTIVATE HOPE PROGRAM CREATED A HEALTHY FOOD CULTURE BY: -HARVESTING APPROXIMATELY 5,300 POUNDS OF PRODUCE. OVER 1000 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER TIME WAS CONTRIBUTED TOWARD GROWING AND MAINTAINING THE URBAN FARM. OUR FARM FRESH FRIEND PROGRAM INCLUDED 19 FAMILIES WHOM HAD FIRST CHOICE OF THE PRODUCE HARVESTED THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT OUR WEEKLY FARM STAND. HALF OF OUR FARM FRESH FRIEND MEMBERS LIVED IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS SERVED BY MATTHEW 25 AND OVER HALF MET LOW INCOME GUIDELINES. -DONATING APPROXIMATELY 1,800 POUNDS OF FOOD. DURING THE GROWING SEASON OF 2014, APPROXIMATELY 3,500 POUNDS WERE SOLD EITHER TO FARM FRESH FRIENDS, MARKET STAND CONSUMERS, OR RESTAURANTS. APPROXIMATELY, 1800 POUNDS WERE DONATED TO NEIGHBORHOOD MEAL PROGRAMS. -EDUCATING APPROXIMATELY 500 PEOPLE IN GROWING HEALTHY FOOD. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDED: --FOUR SCHOOL GARDENS AND SCHOOL GARDEN CLUBS (SEE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT) --TWO SUMMER WEEK LONG FARM CAMPS FOR 3RD THROUGH 5TH GRADERS --FARM TOURS --YOUTH MISSION CAMPS AND VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCES

TODAY, MATTHEW 25 OFFERS A VIRTUAL "TOOLBOX FOR NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDING", WHICH INCLUDES: -HOME REPAIR ASSISTANCE AND MICRO-LOANS -ENERGY EFFICIENT, AFFORDABLE NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION -TOOL LENDING LIBRARY FOR HOME REPAIR, LAWN AND GARDEN -ADVOCACY AND INFORMATION FOR NEW HOMEOWNERS, POTENTIAL HOMEOWNERS, AND RENTERS -MINI-GRANTS FOR NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVEMENT PROJECTSIN OUR FISCAL YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2014, OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDING PROGRAM REVITALIZED COMMUNITIES BY: -REHABBING 2 HOMES. IN 2014, TWO HOMES WERE PURCHASED FOR REHABILITATION WITH THE GOAL OF PROVIDING LOW INCOME RENTAL OPPORTUNITIES. -ASSISTING 12 HOMEOWNERS AND 8 NONPROFITS WITH REPAIR PROJECTS. -CONSTRUCTING 1 NEW HOME. THIS IS OUR THIRD NEW HOME CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. ONCE AGAIN, WE WERE ABLE TO BRING TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD ANOTHER FAMILY WHO HAD NEVER OWNED A HOME. THE VALUE OF THE NEW HOME WAS ABOUT $165,000; BUT, WITH THE APPLICATION OF VARIOUS GRANTS THE PURCHASE COST TO THE HOMEOWNER WAS ABOUT $105,000. -OFFERING AFFORDABLE ACCESS TO A WIDE SPECTRUM OF TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR COMMON HOME MAINTENANCE PROJECTS. SCHOOL GARDENS WERE INITIATED IN CY 2013 AT HARRISON ELEMENTARY AND ROOSEVELT MIDDLE SCHOOLS. IN CY 2014, ADDITIONAL SCHOOL GARDENS WERE ADDED AT TAYLOR ELEMENTARY AND MADISON ELEMENTARY. MATTHEW 25 WORKED TOGETHER ON A WEEKLY BASIS WITH STUDENTS, FAMILIES AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS, TO PROVIDE QUALITY EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THROUGH THE BUILDING AND MAINTAINING OF A SCHOOL GARDEN AT EACH SCHOOL SITE. PRODUCE WAS GIVEN TO STUDENTS' FAMILIES, AS WELL AS TO NEIGHBORHOOD MEAL PROGRAMS. PLANS ARE UNDERWAY IN CY 2015 FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THESE 4 SCHOOL GARDENS AS WELL AS 1 ADDITIONAL GARDEN.
