FEEDING KIDS: 1 in 4 children in San Diego County are at risk of hunger. Nearly half of the people served by Feeding America San Diego are under the age of 18. FASD distributes nutritious food items directly into the hands of local students and their families through the Farm2Kids, Backpack and School Pantry programs. In addition to providing critical food assistance, the Feeding Kids initiative focuses on educating families about the role of fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy, active lifestyle.BackPack: Focused on improving student attendance, academic performance, attentiveness, classroom behavior, and energy level, the BackPack program aims to meet the nutritional needs of children facing hunger over weekends and school holidays. Typically, each child receives an easy-to-carry bag filled with nutritious staple items and two to three pounds of fresh produce when leaving school on Friday afternoon. FASD identifies and partners with schools that have free and reduced price meal rates of 65% or higher, striving to serve entire school populations rather than a select number of students.School Pantry: The School Pantry program helps alleviate child hunger by providing nutritious, healthy food to low-income students and their families. School sites have routine distribution schedules, offer ongoing food assistance services, and provide access to nutrition education and additional community resources. Farm2Kids: The Farm2Kids program provides three to five pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 2,000 students a week and 4,100 a month. Delivered directly to schools throughout the region, produce is distributed at after-school distributions for children to take home to their families.

FEEDING EXCELLENCE: Hunger is a growing problem in San Diego County. Residents not only need more food to eat, but they need healthier food. With nearly half of San Diego residents 1.6 million people considered overweight or obese, this issue is compounded by struggling families purchasing inexpensive foods that tend to be processed and unhealthy. FASD is dedicated to the integration of hunger-relief and wellness. FASD integrates nutrition education, client advocacy, outreach, and capacity building into all initiatives and programs. To reduce the risk of malnutrition and chronic disease, healthy and fresh foods are distributed along with appropriate nutrition education. Advocacy efforts and CalFresh outreach enable clients to make ends meet and move towards self-sufficiency. Additionally, FASD works hand-in-hand with community partners, agencies, and schools, to maximize program impact and build infrastructure.
