| Our purpose: We are passionate about children, equity, and environment. Inspired by the ideas of Paulo Freire, we celebrate the generative ability in every person, near and far.Our mission: Working together with people in coffee producing countries, we transform the world by focusing on children, equity, and environment through programs in education, health, sustainability, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).Children we celebrate the natural ability, curiosity, and worth of every child, benefitting thousands of children and adolescents.Equity we delight in the inspiring and innovative ideas of the people we serve, and we work together to create systems where all people can thrive.Environment we support local people in protecting and restoring the natural environments where they work, live, and raise their families. Our work toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Quality Education has been recognized at Rotary International Day at the United Nations.Over the years, we worked together with people dedicated to transforming their own lives to make these results:Health education 500 people educated on health, hygiene, and nutrition;Literacy and math education 40 adults educated in reading, writing, and math;Child education 200 children educated in academic subjects and in the fundamentals of sustainable and healthy living; Teacher education 180 teachers and staff trained in 18 different schools, empowering them to better teach, care for and connect with children;Children learning 12,000 children have benefitted from training provided to teachers and staff in various schools;Dental care 75 children and their families received dental care and oral hygiene education;Surgeries 8 surgeries were provided or arranged for people who were in need of life-saving or life-changing surgeries;Meals 100,000 healthy meals served to children in need of proper nutrition.2019 AccomplishmentsDevelopment of Dental Care Project in Vitria da Conquista, Bahia, BrazilAt our partner institution FAMEC (Foundation of Assistance and Human Development for Children and Adolescents), children and teens who attend have little or no access to dental care, and many are losing permanent teeth. At the request of FAMEC and local Rotarians, we worked with FAMEC, the Rotary Club of Vitria da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil, and the Rotary Club of Littleton, Colorado, USA on plans to fund, equip, and implement a regular dental care program for these children, teens, and their families. (This program was since approved for funding from Rotary District 5450 and implementation will begin in 2020). Development of Early Childhood Education Project in Talnique, La Libertad, El SalvadorThe coverage of service in education and child development in El Salvador is less than 3% nationally, which has consequences for children throughout the rest of their lives. This project seeks to provide training to existing resources within a community, to institutionalize knowledge in early childhood, and to continue replicating this knowledge in the long term. The project consists of the training of caregivers of children under 7 years of age who live in the rural municipality of Talnique, including the educators of the Centro de Bienestar Infantil San Luis Talnique (San Luis Talnique Child Wellness Center, a childrens early learning center), promoters and health personnel of the Unidad de Salud (Health Unit, a public clinic), as well as training of mother-leaders who will replicate knowledge with other mothers through community circles of play and learning. Through this training, it will be possible for the Centro de Bienestar San Luis Talnique, to function as a training center that can continue to replicate this knowledge and these tools within the community in the long term. Research shows that socio-emotional support, with the introduction to language and reading, are the keys to school readiness, and this project will give children the basic components they need for school readiness and success in the future. We serve as a Cooperating Organization in this $58, 000 Global Grant project of the Rotary Foundation. Upon approval, funds will be managed by Rotary Clubs and Rotarians. (This project has since been submitted to the Rotary Foundation and is in the final phase of the approval process). Teacher Training Project in Vila do Caf district, Encruzilhada, Bahia, BrazilThe majority of the 234 children, ages 2-5, in the Nelzira Palles Municipal Nursery School in Vila do Caf District, Encruzilhada, Bahia, Brazil come from families living in extreme poverty. This affects their physical and emotional wellbeing, their behavior, and their ability to learn. We recognize the need to train teachers and staff to give these children joyful moments and necessary care which values this phase in their childhood and in their lives. The teacher training took place in 2019 and many positive changes in the interactions between teachers, staff, and children have been observed. We also developed additional teacher training projects in 2019: (1) Recreational Dynamics in Child Education and BNCC National Base Common Curriculum, and (2) Music in Early Childhood Education; this training will be implemented post-pandemic. Development of Project - Improving Pre-School Childrens Health with Safe and Sanitary Bathrooms The 234 children, between 2-6 age, who attend the Nelzira Palles Municipal Preschool all come from situations of great poverty and difficulty. Most of them do not have enough food to eat at home and do not have a way to bathe at home. This project in their preschool will make their eating area safe and comforting and will make the bathrooms safe and comforting for their potty time and bathing, especially since most do not have a place to bathe at home. It will also provide safety and protection by updating the electrification and lighting, and by covering dangerous exposed outlets and wires. This project and budget were developed in 2019 during a trip to Brazil and a visit with children, parents, preschool staff, and local government officials. (This project has since been proposed to the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Washington D.C. for funding and implementation in 2020).Development of Project for Health, Safety, and Recreation for Preschool Chlidren in Vila do Caf, Encruzilhada, Bahia, BrazilSince the founding of the Nelzira Palles Municipal Preschool in 1992, the children who attend this institution have suffered on rainy days and on days when the sun is very hot. This is because the Nelzira Palles Municipal preschool is divided in two blocks with classrooms, and until recently there was no cover between them. On rainy days, it was not possible for the children to leave their classes to go to the cafeteria. For this reason, the meals were served within the classroom itself. However, when a child needed to use the bathroom, sadly the child would have to leave the classroom to cross the patio area. The majority of times the teacher would use her umbrella to try to keep the child from getting wet; however, this was only partially effective and often the childs feet would become soaking wet. During these rainy days or days of intense sun, it wasnt possible for the children to have their recess time to play on the patio, and even the play-based classes which the teachers planned were usually planned for outside of the classrom, so the children had to stay for all four hours of class without being able to leave their classroms. Now that the children have a cover for the patio that provides more comfort and safety for the children, regardless of weather conditions, the reality is totally different. Since its founding, the Preschool never possessed a playground or even toys that could help provide moments of leisure. Due to the lack of options for the chidren to have fun at recess time, there would be many fights among the children. To provide more options for the children, we also developed a playground project for the Nelzira Palles Municipal Preschool. (These projects were funded by Java Jacket in 2019. Construction of the cover was completed in early 2020 and the playground will likely be built by the end of 2020).WASH Project at the Centro Escolar Talnique in Talnique, La Libertad, El SalvadorWe served as a Cooperating Organization on Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation in the amount of $45,837 on a WASH project to build water systems, bathrooms, and sinks for the approximately 400 children and adolescents at the Centro Escolar Talnique in Talnique, La Libertad, El Salvador, and to provide education on sanitation, hygiene, and other relevant topics.El Salvador is the most violent peacetime country in the world, with the highest rates of homicide and femicide globally, due to gang violence. Therefore, topics relevant to gender equity, promoting peace, and staying safe were all addressed. This project provided the children with washable bathrooms, hygiene education, and training on e | $39,159 | - |
