THIS PROJECT PREPARES YOUNG CHILDREN FROM VERY DISADVANTAGED HOMES IN TALNIQUE, LA LIBERTAD, EL SALVADOR TO BE READY FOR KINDERGARTEN, LIKE THE HEAD START PROGRAM, AND A TOOL THAT HAS BEEN PROVEN EFFECTIVE ELSEWHERE, BY: "PREPARING THE 2 TEACHERS OF THE PRESCHOOL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN AND PREPARING THE 2 TEACHERS (KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE) OF THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO SUPPORT CHILDREN'S LEARNING IN THE TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN AND THEN INTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. "TRAINING CLINIC STAFF (2 NURSES, 1 DOCTOR, OTHER CLINIC STAFF) TO RECOGNIZE DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS OR WHEN CHILDREN ARE AT RISK OF NOT MEETING THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES. “2021 program accomplishments: 1.early childhood education project in talnique, la libertad, el salvador: children from very disadvantaged homes in talnique, la libertad, el salvador are often not ready for kindergarten and therefore cannot keep up with school and often drop out. This makes them especially vulnerable to being recruited by gangs. This project prepares young children from very disadvantaged homes in talnique, la libertad, el salvador to be ready for kindergarten, like the head start program, and a tool that has been proven effective elsewhere, by: "preparing the 2 teachers of the preschool to prepare children for kindergarten and preparing the 2 teachers (kindergarten and first grade) of the local elementary school to support children's learning in the transition to kindergarten and then into elementary school. "training clinic staff (2 nurses, 1 doctor, other clinic staff) to recognize developmental delays or when children are at risk of not meeting their developmental milestones. "training 10 mother mentors to teach 240 mothers and fathers what they can do at home to prepare a child for literacy, directly benefitting 250 children. This project began in august of 2021 in partnership with local educators, healthcare professionals, parents, children, and glasswing international. 13 training sessions were held with an average of 10 adults attending each session. Children were included in the last 5 sessions, with approximately 30 children participating. This project will continue into 2022, with most of the trainings happening in 2022, including supervised home trainings by mentors for 240 parents. There will be 2 home visits per month over 8 months, benefitting 250 young children. This project will also serve as a model to inform the national early childhood development policy in el salvador. 2. Dental project for children and families in vitria da conquista, bahia, brazil. At famec (foundation of assistance and human development center for children and adolescents), a school and center for children and teens, the students who attend have little or no access to dental care, and many are losing permanent teeth. We provided famec with dental equipment to open a dental clinic. The dental equipment was ordered and / or purchased in 2021. Due the pandemic, the school and therefore the dental clinic could not open in 2021, but the school will open in early 2022 and the dental clinic will begin operating in early 2022. Approximately 350 people will receive regular dental care and oral hygiene education. 3. Bathrooms for preschool children in vila do caf, encruzilhada, bahia, brazil. For the 240 children who attend the nelzira palles municipal preschool in vila do caf, encruzilhada, bahia, brazil, there were no safe, working bathrooms they could use. The toilets and sinks were broken and did not work. The chairs and tables were also broken, unsafe, and not appropriate for very young children. Furthermore, the electrical system was faulty, with exposed wires and outlets, and the school was poorly lit. This project repaired and remodeled the bathrooms so that there are now toilets and sinks that work and are sized for very young children. This project replaced the broken chairs and tables with safe and appropriately sized ones. This project will also repair the electrical and lighting system in early 2022. Due to the pandemic, the preschool was closed in 2021, and will reopen in early 2022.”

THIS MAKES THEM ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE TO BEING RECRUITED BY GANGS. THIS PROJECT PREPARES YOUNG CHILDREN FROM VERY DISADVANTAGED HOMES IN TALNIQUE, LA LIBERTAD, EL SALVADOR TO BE READY FOR KINDERGARTEN, LIKE THE HEAD START PROGRAM, AND A TOOL THAT HAS BEEN PROVEN EFFECTIVE ELSEWHERE, BY: "PREPARING THE 2 TEACHERS OF THE PRESCHOOL TO PREPARE CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN AND PREPARING THE 2 TEACHERS (KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE) OF THE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO SUPPORT CHILDREN'S LEARNING IN THE TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN AND THEN INTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. "TRAINING CLINIC STAFF (2 NURSES, 1 DOCTOR, OTHER CLINIC STAFF) TO RECOGNIZE DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS OR WHEN CHILDREN ARE AT RISK OF NOT MEETING THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES. "TRAINING 10 MOTHER MENTORS TO TEACH 240 MOTHERS AND FATHERS WHAT THEY CAN DO AT HOME TO PREPARE A CHILD FOR LITERACY, DIRECTLY BENEFITTING 250 CHILDREN. THIS PROJECT BEGAN IN AUGUST OF 2021 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL EDUCATORS, HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, PARENTS, CHILDREN, AND GLASSWING INTERNATIONAL. 13 TRAINING SESSIONS WERE HELD WITH AN AVERAGE OF 10 ADULTS ATTENDING EACH SESSION. CHILDREN WERE INCLUDED IN THE LAST 5 SESSIONS, WITH APPROXIMATELY 30 CHILDREN PARTICIPATING. THIS PROJECT WILL CONTINUE INTO 2022, WITH MOST OF THE TRAININGS HAPPENING IN 2022, INCLUDING SUPERVISED HOME TRAININGS BY MENTORS FOR 240 PARENTS. THERE WILL BE 2 HOME VISITS PER MONTH OVER 8 MONTHS, BENEFITTING 250 YOUNG CHILDREN. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO SERVE AS A MODEL TO INFORM THE NATIONAL EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT POLICY IN EL SALVADOR. 2. DENTAL PROJECT FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN VITRIA DA CONQUISTA, BAHIA, BRAZIL. AT FAMEC (FOUNDATION OF ASSISTANCE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS), A SCHOOL AND CENTER FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS, THE STUDENTS WHO ATTEND HAVE LITTLE OR NO ACCESS TO DENTAL CARE, AND MANY ARE LOSING PERMANENT TEETH. WE PROVIDED FAMEC WITH DENTAL EQUIPMENT TO OPEN A DENTAL CLINIC. THE DENTAL EQUIPMENT WAS ORDERED AND / OR PURCHASED IN 2021. DUE THE PANDEMIC, THE SCHOOL AND THEREFORE THE DENTAL CLINIC COULD NOT OPEN IN 2021, BUT THE SCHOOL WILL OPEN IN EARLY 2022 AND THE DENTAL CLINIC WILL BEGIN OPERATING IN EARLY 2022. APPROXIMATELY 350 PEOPLE WILL RECEIVE REGULAR DENTAL CARE AND ORAL HYGIENE EDUCATION. 3. BATHROOMS FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN VILA DO CAF, ENCRUZILHADA, BAHIA, BRAZIL. FOR THE 240 CHILDREN WHO ATTEND THE NELZIRA PALLES MUNICIPAL PRESCHOOL IN VILA DO CAF, ENCRUZILHADA, BAHIA, BRAZIL, THERE WERE NO SAFE, WORKING BATHROOMS THEY COULD USE. THE TOILETS AND SINKS WERE BROKEN AND DID NOT WORK. THE CHAIRS AND TABLES WERE ALSO BROKEN, UNSAFE, AND NOT APPROPRIATE FOR VERY YOUNG CHILDREN. FURTHERMORE, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS FAULTY, WITH EXPOSED WIRES AND OUTLETS, AND THE SCHOOL WAS POORLY LIT. THIS PROJECT REPAIRED AND REMODELED THE BATHROOMS SO THAT THERE ARE NOW TOILETS AND SINKS THAT WORK AND ARE SIZED FOR VERY YOUNG CHILDREN. THIS PROJECT REPLACED THE BROKEN CHAIRS AND TABLES WITH SAFE AND APPROPRIATELY SIZED ONES. THIS PROJECT WILL ALSO REPAIR THE ELECTRICAL AND LIGHTING SYSTEM IN EARLY 2022. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE PRESCHOOL WAS CLOSED IN 2021, AND WILL REOPEN IN EARLY 2022. |
