Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Established in 1968, bidwell training center (btc) changes lives by providing career training and academic enrichment to adults in transition. In its 2016 annual report to the accrediting commission of career schools and colleges (accsc), btc reported aggregated completion and job placement rates of 82 percent and 78 percent, respectively, for its seven majors, which include culinary arts, chemical laboratory technician, electronic record medical assistant, horticulture technology, medical claims processor, medical coder, and pharmacy technician. Both the graduation and placement rates exceed accsc benchmarks.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Academic & support services - the academic & support services department served over 300 individuals through providing tutoring and other academic remediation offerings in 2011-12. Btc's admissions department has seen a continued high number of participants in information sessions, and many of these participants ultimately enroll in one of btc's majors. Btc's admissions representatives interface and coordinate with various outside agencies and community groups that serve audiences who could benefit from btc's services. In a continued effort to ensure each student's successful completion of their career training and placement in a training-related job, btc offered the services of a part-time licensed counselor to serve as a resource to students in transition. Btc provides personal advising and referral services (i.e. Childcare, housing and transportation) to assist students with barriers that might interfere with successfully completing training. Professional development and hob placement services are provided to all students to prepare them for the job search, utilization of skills in the workplace and employer expectations.
Activity 3
Culinary arts program - culinary arts is one of btc's most popular majors. Btc offers market-driven program curricula, which is designed in conjunction with pittsburgh's largest corporate employers to ensure that btc graduates are prepared for careers in fields that are important to the future of the region. In its november 2011 annual report to the accsc, btc reported 83% completion and 92% placement rates for its culinary arts program. Each culinary arts student undertakes 11 months of rigorous training that includes lecture, hands-on instruction, amphitheater demonstrations, large scale cooking in a working kitchen environment, and daily preparation of lunch for students and staff in btc's dining hall.also of note, as a result of its 2011 accsc accreditation renewal process, which occurs every five years, btc was named a 2011-12 school of excellence, which is accsc's highest honor. Btc is one of only 17 out of 800 accsc-accredited schools to achieve this distinction.

IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation0THE ART COLLECTION IS VITAL TO THE MISSION OF THE ORGANIZATION BECAUSE IT PROVIDES UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR URBAN YOUTH AND ADULTS TO SEE, DISCUSS, EVALUATE, AND APPRECIATE ART. ART PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL DISCUSSION TO ADDRESS MODERN DAY ISSUES IMPACTING DIVERSITY. IT CAN BUILD AWARENESS AND BRIDGES BETWEEN DIFFERENT CULTURES. STUDYING AND VIEWING ART ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN HOW TO PRODUCE ART AND PRESERVE HISTORY AND CULTURE THROUGH ART.
IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation1MBC AND ITS NONPROFIT AFFILIATES ARE ORGANIZED UNDER THE NONPROFIT CORPORATION LAW OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA. EACH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION IS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAXES UNDER SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AND IS NOT A PRIVATE FOUNDATION AS PROVIDED BY THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE. ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES GENERALLY ACCEPTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA REQUIRE THE ORGANIZATION'S MANAGEMENT TO EVALUATE TAX POSITIONS TAKEN BY THE ORGANIZATION AND RECOGNIZE A TAX LIABILITY (OR ASSET) IF THE ORGANIZATION HAS TAKEN A POSITION THAT IS UNCERTAIN. AN UNCERTAIN POSITION IS DEFINED AS ONE IN WHICH THERE IS A 50% OR GREATER LIKELIHOOD THAT THE POSITION WILL NOT BE SUSTAINED UPON EXAMINATION BY A TAXING AUTHORITY. MANAGEMENT HAS ANALYZED THE TAX POSITIONS TAKEN BY THE ORGANIZATION AND HAS CONCLUDED THAT, AS OF JUNE 30, 2012, THERE ARE NO UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS TAKEN OR EXPECTED TO BE TAKEN. THE ORGANIZATION HAS RECOGNIZED NO INTEREST OR PENALTIES RELATED TO UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS. THE ORGANIZATION IS SUBJECT TO ROUTINE AUDITS BY TAXING JURISDICTIONS; HOWEVER, THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO AUDITS FOR ANY TAX PERIODS IN PROGRESS. MANAGEMENT BELIEVES THE ORGANIZATION IS NO LONGER SUBJECT TO INCOME TAX EXAMINATIONS FOR YEARS PRIOR TO 2008.
