Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The allegheny conference on community development (accd) and affiliates - the greater pittsburgh chamber of commerce (chamber), the pennsylvania economy league of greater pittsburgh(pelgp) and the pittsburgh regional alliance (pra) - work in collaboration with public and private sector partners to stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life in southwestern pennsylvania.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Working to stimulate business investment and advance regional prosperity, the allegheny conference, along with support from the pittsburgh regional alliance (pra) partnership - a coalition of 50-plus private and public sector leaders and economic development professionals from 10 southwestern pennsylvania counties - procured and assisted in locating 38 commercial projects in the pittsburgh region. These 38 located projects represent a capital investment of $120 million and 4,020 employment opportunities - 2,890 jobs created and 1,130 jobs retained. In addition, to build on the successes of the pittsburgh summit and advance both our region's story and our economy, a six-month (april-september 2010) "post g-20 global outreach program" was implemented. The program was based on a series of five inbound and outbound opportunities for business missions, media familiarization tours, and activities that brought together thought leaders, influencers and business decision makers. The program leveraged our region's cultural assets by partnering with the pittsburgh symphony on its european tour and our leadership in environmental transformation by organizing media familiarization tours around world environment day in june 2010 and the opening of the consol energy center (in september 2010). The consol energy center is the first gold leed-certified nhl arena in the united states. These opportunities will continue to enhance perceptions of pittsburgh as a top global destination for both investment and deep opportunity for talent. In 2010, the conference, in partnership with the allegheny county airport authority, continued its efforts to maintain non-stop, direct transatlantic service to pittsburgh international airport via a revenue guarantee to a participating airline to keep the pittsburgh region a competitive location for global business retention and expansion.
Activity 3
In 2010, the allegheny conference partnered with the pittsburgh penguins to produce the pittsburgh penguins ultimate home game. With the opening of the consol energy center as the world's only gold leed-certified indoor arena in september, the penguins approached the allegheny conference to help showcase their new venue. The team wanted to provide a third pre-season game and give away all 18,000 tickets to young people. The allegheny conference determined that such an event was consistent with its desire to raise awareness among young people of career opportunities in the region, countering the conventional wisdom that "there are no jobs here." while the penguins focused on the game and related events, the allegheny conference spearheaded the giveaway of 8,000 tickets to college students through imaginepittsburgh.com, asking entrants to complete a survey to qualify for the tickets. The giveaway generated a mailing list of more than 20,000 college students interested in learning more about career opportunities in the region, a number of whom participated in additional penguins events during the season. During the ultimate home game, the allegheny conference helped to organize and promote a career fair for students and engaged the pittsburgh building trades through a ticket giveaway directed at their young apprentices. The event, a first, generated national publicity and considerable interest throughout an expanded "greater pittsburgh region" which included more than 50 colleges and universities in western pennsylvania, eastern ohio and northern west virginia. The allegheny conference was able to bring together the various stakeholders needed to make the event a success, including corporate sponsors, college career counselors, the building trades and, of course, the penguins themselves.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0WORKING TO STIMULATE BUSINESS INVESTMENT AND ADVANCE REGIONAL PROSPERITY, THE ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE, ALONG WITH SUPPORT FROM THE PITTSBURGH REGIONAL ALLIANCE (PRA) PARTNERSHIP - A COALITION OF 50-PLUS PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR LEADERS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONALS FROM 10 SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA COUNTIES - PROCURED AND ASSISTED IN LOCATING 38 COMMERCIAL PROJECTS IN THE PITTSBURGH REGION.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0IN 2010, THE ALLEGHENY CONFERENCE PARTNERED WITH THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS TO PRODUCE THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS ULTIMATE HOME GAME.
