Mission

Self help graphics & art (shg) inspires the creation and promotion of new works by chicano and latino artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms/media. Since 1973, shg has been the intersection where arts and community meet, providing a forum for local and international artists.

Self help graphics & arts (shg) is a nationally recognized center for latino arts that develops and nurtures artists in printmaking . Incorporated in 1073, shg seeks to advance latino art broadly through programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audience in east los angeles and beyond. Shg seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities. Key program endeavors include the print making atelier, which offers resources for artists to create and produce unique serigraphs and the exhibit print program, which brings art exhibitions to local, regional, national and international audiences. Shg is also dedicated to serving local youth through a variety of programming including its community workshop which serves the local east la community with free on-site art workshops. These workshops serve as a grassroots approach in encouraging creativity among families and children.

THROUGH ITS COLLECTION, SHG SERVES AS A RESOURCE FOR ACADEMIC RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP FOR HISTORIANS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS. SHG REMAINS A KEY INSTITUTION IN THE CULTURE OF EAST LOS ANGELES AND CALIFORNIA AS A CULTURAL NEXUS OF DEVELOPMENT OF EMERGING ARTISTS WHO USE ITS FACILITIES TO BRING THEIR ARTISTIC SKILLS AND IDEALS TO MATURITY.
