Mission and Program Overview
Mission
Self help graphics & art (shg) inspires the creation and promotion of new works by chicano and latino artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms/media. Since 1973, shg has been the intersection where arts and community meet, providing a forum for local and international artists.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Community and youth programs: shg promotes and supports the work of emerging, established and mid-career chicano/latino visual artists and provides a space where they can work in a egalitarian atmosphere of creativity and cooperation. Shg's public art workshops attracts all level artists to come and work at shg in a variety of art mediums such as intaglio printmaking, diy silkscreening, and many other forms. Shg is one of the few places in la that offers artists a space where they can develop artistically regardless of age, race and ethnicity.
- Activity 3
- Exhibition print program: new work in all print mediums has been exhibited to local, regional, national and international audiences. The focus of this exhibition is to showcase the work shg and its artists create onsite to broader audiences, as well as to provide art to non-traditional sites and underserved segments of the community, which would otherwise not have the opportunity to enjoy the art and culture represented in the images of the prints.
