Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The world evangelical alliance exists to foster christian unity and to provide a worldwide identity, voice and platform to evangelical christians. Seeking empowerment by the holy spirit, they extend the kingdom of god by proclamation of the gospel to all nations and by christ-centered transformation within society.

The wea serves the leaders and staff of its 129 national evangelical alliances and over 150 member organizations with global christian research, news, publications, leadership training and resources. It is strategically situated to represent christians globally in society, media and to governmental and religious institutions. Increasingly the wea is asked to give an authoritative christian response to world events as well as speak out on issues of religious persecution and global peace efforts. Lastly, wea is solely positioned to connect national alliances, churches and para-church ministries for effective collaborative action. The power of the collective impact is exponentially greater than that of separate activities. Furthermore, the benefit of pooling resources minimizes duplication.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 6

There are three classes of membership in the alliance: full members, associate members, global partners and corporate members. 1. Full membership is open to any national body (that is, a body representing a country) ("national member") or regional body (a region being a large geographical area, including a number of countries, or a continent) ("regional member") which represents an adequate cross-section of evangelicals in its country or area, is organized with a written constitution, is in accord with the statement of faith and objects of the alliance as set out in the constitution and pays such annual dues as are payable by full members from time to time. Full membership is open to more than one national member in a country, provided such body represents an adequate cross-section of evangelicals in its country or area, whether based on ethnic, linguistic, ecclesiastical or regional distinctives. 2. Associate membership is open to any supra-national or cross-cultural evangelical body having a substantial presence in international evangelical work, provided it is in accord with the statement of faith and objects of the alliance as set out in the constitution and pays such annual and other dues as are payable by associate members from time to time and except in the case of supra-national governing bodies representing several countries, such bodies must be in good standing with the full member in the place where it has its central office for international operations. 3. Global partner membership is open to any international organization that shall serve as a non-structured ministry partner of the alliance in a specialized field and contribute to achieve the objects of the alliance. Global partner membership is open to any international organization that shall serve as a non-structured ministry partner of the alliance in a specialized field and contribute to achieve the objects of the alliance. 4. Corporate membership is open to any denomination (that is, an association of local churches) and church network (that is, a network of local churches ("corporate member") either in one country or a number of countries, is organized with a written constitution or other written basis of association, is in accord with the statement of faith and objects of the alliance as set out in the constitution, is a member of the national member where it is organised and pays such annual dues as are payable by full members from time to time.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Full members have the power to elect at least eleven members of the board at each meeting of the general assembly.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7B

Changes to the bylaws and matters specifically identified by the bylaws are reserved for determination by the full members.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The organization has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm and has established the following review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate. When the form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by management and an independent consultant and is ready to be filed with the internal revenue service, it is electronically sent to the board members of the organization for any comments. Any comments are then grouped, summarized and provided to the outside accountants. Each issue is documented and addressed until the return is finalized and approved for filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12

The organization is a charitable organization whose board members and employees are chosen to serve the public purposes to which the organization is dedicated. These persons have a duty to conduct the affairs of the organization in a manner consistent with such purposes and not to advance their personal interests. This conflict-of-interest policy is intended to permit the board members and employees to identify, evaluate, and address any real, potential, or apparent conflicts of interest that might, in fact or in appearance, call into question their duty of undivided loyalty. Relevant individuals are required to disclose annually interests that could give rise to conflict. After disclosure of a conflict, the individual in question must recuse themselves from voting on the matter. Such matters involving the existence of conflicts of interest are to be documented in the minutes of the governing board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its form 990 available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue code. In addition, the financial statements, conflict of interest policy, articles of incorporation, form 990, form 1023, and by-laws are also available upon written request or by calling the organization directly.
