Preservation advocacy: historic boulder's 2019 preservation advocacy was centered on the city- owned 1899 harbeck-bergheim house. At a series of public meetings, we opposed the sale of the historic estate and encouraged the city of boulder to retain and preserve this cultural asset for public use. We offered assistance with selection criteria for future tenants, a vision statement for use, and research on the art glass windows. We met with neighborhood groups, wrote letters to the newspaper and city council and built relationships to support the preservation of this unique property. Due to these sustained efforts, the city of boulder opted to retain ownership of the building and accept competitive bids to lease the space, judging applicants on a scale of economic benefit to the city versus cultural contribution to the neighborhood. The winning bid was for the women's wilderness institute, a nonprofit supporting women, girls, and the lgbtq+ community seeking health and community in the outdoors. We successfully advocated for restoring the archivist position and public hours at the carnegie library for local history. The carnegie library is a vital resource to anyone conducting historic research in boulder county, and historic boulder could not fulfill its mission without access to its archives. We submitted a landmark designation application for marpa house, which represented over 40 years of buddhist-centered living, education, and community. The city of boulder will act on the application next year. We are working with the state historical society, history boulder, and the boulder theater owners to restore the iconic boulder theater facade. The assessment of work needed will be completed in 2020. Educational programs: our salon series included three free lectures at the boulder carnegie library exploring local agricultural history, including homesteading, cannabis, and the boulder apple tree project. We partnered with bolder adventure travel to offer a history hike program at notable historic sites. The hikes explored walker ranch via snowshoe on the meyers homestead trail, eldorado canyon, and boulder canyon. We worked with nist (the national institute for standards and technology) and the city of boulder to provide a public tour entitled, "when big science came to boulder," which explored the impacts of large scientific communities on our county's culture and development. The first public tour of building 1 allowed participants to experience the architecture, the original lab, and the historic context of the first federal laboratory in boulder. Another themed tour was "music and counter-culture on the hill," where we partnered with five local businesses to educate the public about boulder culture and development in the 1960s and 1970s. Signature events: a board member sponsored a fundraising event showcasing landmarks of the future. The event included a slide show featuring boulder's mid-century modern structures and a panel discussion with local architects regarding the future of architecture in boulder. With a 10,000 match by the board member, the total raised was 19,400. In august, our membership party was held at the mcginnis house, aka the "wedding cake" house. Members toured the main level of the home, which featured different woods in each room. A continuously-running video highlighted the history of the home. Our 34rd annual homes for the holidays tour featured five farm houses in winter and was supported by a wide variety of community businesses and volunteers. The tour included live music, local farm products, and educational demonstrations. This event continues to be popular as well as an important source of revenue for our organization. 2019 was our most successful event yet, with over 500 people attending.
