Preserves and protects western montana's natural legacy - our river corridors, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands and scenic open spaces through conservation easements and long-term stewardship of the protected land.
Our mission is to protect for future generations western montana's natural legacy, our river corridors, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, and community open spaces. The five valleys we serve are the bitterroot, the blackfoot, the upper clark fork, the lower clark fork, and the mission-jocko. We believe that the character of these valleys, and the thriving communities in them, is rooted in the clean rivers, open lands, and abundant wildlife that surround them. We work with communities, private landowners, governments, and other partners to protect these natural treasures for the benefit of this and future generations.

“Grassland species, including indigenous missoula phlox, bitterroot, bluebirds, elk, and birds of prey. Through a connected trails plan, the bluebird-north hills property will provide access to previously inaccessible conservation lands, opening over 420 acres to the missoula community and extending the arc of conservation lands around the city, from grant creek to mount dean stone. Five valleys is proud to be continuing our work of enhancing the livability of our community while protecting treasured open space and wildlife habitat. Mount dean stone corridor: at the close of 2019, five valleys was happy to announce that it had finalized three land deals that will provide a trail corridor up to and around the mount dean stone ridge. This achievement marks the culmination of years of listening, negotiations, and patience, and stands as a major milestone for the greater mount dean stone project. Prior to five valleys' ownership, the 350-acre corridor was comprised of 17 different parcels, including a parcel that was approved for a 10-lot residential subdivision. At the end of 2019, three private landowners worked with five valleys in order to conserve the final pieces of the corridor and move them into five valleys' ownership. Now protected, the corridor will soon be home to a nearly five-mile trail. Currently called the "high, wide and handsome trail," the route will extend from where the barmeyer and sousa trails end on the south hills spur, up to and around the mount dean stone summit. The corridor winds through a grassland ridge into upland coniferous forest and end in a scenic, subalpine meadow. On a clear day, future trail users will be able see up the blackfoot to the scapegoat wilderness, as well as enjoy views the missoula valley, pattee canyon, and the northern bitterroot mountains. Where it loops around the mount dean stone summit, the trail will connect to the planned 4.6-mile house of sky trail. Once complete, the house of sky trail and the high, wide and handsome trail will, for the first time, create a united trails network across the mount dean stone landscape. The mount dean stone project is a multi-partner, multi-year effort that seeks to connect open space and trails across a 4,200-acre complex, from pattee canyon across the ridge of mount dean stone and down into miller creek. Now into its fifth year, the massive project would not be possible without the collaboration of over 20 partnering organizations and businesses that have united to form the mount dean stone committee. Led by five valleys, the committee helping to guide the project, which aims to solidify our community's connection to our landscape, improve forest health and reduce the risk of wildfire on the edge of town, safeguard the next generation's access to the lands we depend upon for our rich quality of life, and protect wildlife habitat. Five valleys looks forward to working with the mount dean stone committee to provide our community with the ability to recreate across mount dean stone, and are grateful to the many landowners and project partners for helping to make it possible. Land stewardship: five valleys' stewardship staff works with public and private partners to improve protected lands for their conservation purpose. A conservation easement commits the organization to a perpetual responsibility of stewarding the protected conservation values and supporting landowners in their efforts to manage their land with conservation in mind. Stewardship work involves monitoring the conservation easements and visiting with landowners annually to listen to their concerns and achieve their management goals in a way that achieves optimal protection for their land. Five valleys enlists a broad group of partners to complete this work including students, volunteers, and contractors. Five valleys conducted weed treatments, land restoration, and landowner support activities throughout its service area. In february, to help educate landowners about invasive g”
“Land protection easements held by the organization hold no financial value, and the landowner retains full ownership of the land. The cost to acquire purchased or donated easements is expensed as acquisition expenses when incurred.”
“Five valleys land trust created the five valleys land trust endowment with the montana community foundation to assist those benefactors who want to give restricted gifts to the organization. Fvlt also established an endowment trust on december 19, 2002 for the purpose of setting aside funds for perpetuity for the benefit of the organization.”
“The organization operates under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) as a non-profit organization and, therefore, is exempt from income taxes unless taxable income would result from business operations not directly related to the organization's exempt purpose. A provision for income taxes has not been recorded for the years ended december 31, 2019 and 2018, because the organization had no business income unrelated to its exempt activities.”
