Preserves and protects western montana's natural legacy - our river corridors, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands and scenic open spaces through conservation easements and long-term stewardship of the protected land.
Our mission is to protect for future generations western montana's natural legacy, our river corridors, wildlife habitat, agricultural lands, and community open spaces. The five valleys we serve are the bitterroot, the blackfoot, the upper clark fork, the lower clark fork, and the mission-jocko. We believe that the character of these valleys, and the thriving communities in them, is rooted in the clean rivers, open lands, and abundant wildlife that surround them. We work with communities, private landowners, governments, and other partners to protect these natural treasures for the benefit of this and future generations.

EXAMPLES OF THESE PROJECTS INCLUDE THE ALBERTON GORGE, HIAWATHA ROUTE, MOUNT JUMBO, MOUNT SENTINEL, AND THE RATTLESNAKE GREENWAY. LANDS WE PROTECTEDCAHOON-WOODWORTH MEADOWS CONSERVATION EASEMENT:WOODWORTH MEADOWS, SOUTH OF SEELEY LAKE, IS KNOWN FOR ITS MAGNIFICENT SCENERY, FAMILY FARMS AND RANCHES AND ABUNDANT WILDLIFE. IN JANUARY, FIVE VALLEYS AND LANDOWNERS RALPH AND PEGGY CAHOON FINALIZED THE CAHOON- WOODWORTH MEADOWS CONSERVATION EASEMENT, PROTECTING 100 ACRES OF THIS SPECIAL PLACE. EVERY ACRE OF THE PROPERTY INCLUDES AGRICULTURAL SOILS OF STATEWIDE IMPORTANCE, AS DESIGNATED BY THE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE. THE EASEMENT ENSURES THAT THE LAND CAN FOREVER BE USED FOR GRAZING AND HAY PRODUCTION, JUST AS IT IS NOW. THE CAHOON EASEMENT IS ALSO REMARKABLE FOR ITS PROXIMITY TO OTHER PROTECTED LANDS, INCLUDING OTHER FIVE VALLEYS CONSERVATION EASEMENTS, THE BOB MARSHALL WILDERNESS, U.S. FOREST SERVICE LANDS, AND THE BLACKFOOT-CLEARWATER WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA. THE AREA'S WILDLIFE-INCLUDING ELK, GRIZZLIES, LYNX AND MOUNTAIN LIONS-DEPEND UPON THE MIGRATION CORRIDORS THAT PROTECTED OPEN LANDS PROVIDE TO MOVE FREELY ACROSS THE LANDSCAPE. THE PROJECT ALSO ENABLED THE CAHOONS AND THEIR FAMILY TO MEET THEIR SUCCESSIONAL PLANNING GOALS. FUNDING FROM THE LOR FOUNDATION, THE MISSOULA COUNTY OPEN SPACE BOND AND DONATIONS FROM THE LANDOWNERS HELPED MAKE THE PROJECT POSSIBLE. WE'RE HONORED TO HAVE HAD A HAND IN PROTECTING MORE OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY PLACE.J T RANCHES CONSERVATION EASEMENT: THE PICTURESQUE ANTELOPE HILLS, JUST WEST OF PHILIPSBURG, HAVE LONG SUPPORTED BOTH AGRICULTURE AND ROBUST WILDLIFE POPULATIONS. AFTER A LARGE SWATH OF THESE HISTORIC WORKING LANDS WERE SUBDIVIDED, LOCAL RANCHERS JOLEEN MESHNIK AND TIM HILMO BEGAN TO KNIT SOME OF THE PARCELS BACK TOGETHER, INTO THEIR OPERATION, J T RANCHES. NOW, THANKS TO THEIR CONSERVATION EASEMENT, 681 ACRES WILL BE PROTECTED IN PERPETUITY. THE PROPERTY VARIES FROM IRRIGATED HAY MEADOWS TO MONTANE GRASSLANDS TO TIMBERLANDS IN THE JOHN LONG MOUNTAINS FOOTHILLS. THIS SCENERY IS VISIBLE FROM HIGHWAY 1, AND THE DIVERSITY OF HABITATS PROVIDES FOR ELK, MOUNTAIN LIONS, GRIZZLIES, AND A VARIETY OF BIRDS. OVER HALF OF THE PROPERTY IS MADE UP OF PRIME OR IMPORTANT SOILS ACCORDING THE NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE (NRCS), ON WHICH JOLEEN AND TIM RUN CATTLE AND RAISE HAY. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IS KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROJECT, AND THERE IS STILL MUCH TO ACCOMPLISH. FIVE VALLEYS AND THE MOUNT DEAN STONE COMMITTEE PARTNERS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT 2019 HAS IN STORE.ROCK CREEK CONFLUENCE PROPERTY: IT WAS AN EXCITING YEAR AT OUR ROCK CREEK CONFLUENCE PROPERTY. FIVE VALLEYS WORKED WITH SUMMIT INDEPENDENT LIVING TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE 1/3 MILE ALL ABILITIES TRAIL THAT WAS BUILT IN 2017. THE TRAIL NOW HAS A WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE PARKING AREA, TOILET FACILITY, AND A WILDLIFE VIEWING PLATFORM THAT OVERLOOKS THE WETLAND RESTORATION AREA. FUTURE FIELD SEASONS WILL SEE ADDITIONAL ALL ABILITIES FEATURES ADDED TO THE TRAIL. OUR RESTORATION AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS ALSO HAD A BUSY YEAR. VOLUNTEERS PLANTED OVER 300 SHRUBS ON THE WETLAND RESTORATION AREA DURING A WORKDAY ORGANIZED BY UNIVERSITY OF MONTANA (UM) ECOSYSTEM SCIENCE AND RESTORATION STUDENTS. THESE SHRUBS WERE CARED FOR BY FIVE VALLEYS VOLUNTEERS, STAFF FROM ANDERSON ZURMUEHLEN & CO., KIDS FROM YOUTH HOMES, AND MISSOULA COUNTY WEED DISTRICT YOUTH IN RESTORATION CREW MEMBERS OVER THE SUMMER. THE UM BIRD ECOLOGY LAB BIRD BANDING STATION WELCOMED MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC, AND SUMMER CAMPERS AND STUDENTS FROM UM CAMPUS RECREATION AND MONTANA NATURAL HISTORY CENTER PROGRAMS. CLINTON SCHOOL 7TH GRADERS AIDED IN RESTORATION THROUGH THE CLARK FORK COALITION'S RIPARIAN RX PROGRAM. BRADEN COLLARD COMPLETED HIS BIRD HABITAT EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT IN THE WEST SIDE MEADOW, AND VETERANS FROM TEAM RUBICON SHARPENED THEIR FIRST RESPONDER SKILLS WHILE ASSISTING WITH TIMBER THINNING. IN ALL, THE CONFLUENCE'S NATURAL CLASSROOM HOSTED NEARLY 700 COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND FOSTERED PARTNERSHIPS WITH 15 ORGANIZATIONS IN 2018.MARSHALL MOUNTAIN: OUR 160-ACRE PORTION OF MARSHALL MOUNTAIN, NEAR EAST MISSOULA HAS UNDERGONE A TRANSFORMATION IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. OUR PARTNER MTB MISSOULA, WITH SUPPORT FROM THE NATURE CONSERVANCY, BIG SKY BREWING COMPANY AND A HOST OF HARDY VOLUNTEERS, HAS BEEN BUSY BUILDING WORLD-CLASS MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAILS ON THE SITE, AND BIKING ENTHUSIASTS HAVE TAKEN NOTE. IN OCTOBER, MARSHALL MOUNTAIN HOSTED USA CYCLING'S COLLEGIATE MOUNTAIN BIKE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR THE SECOND YEAR, WHICH BROUGHT OVER 80 COLLEGE TEAMS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO THE AREA. THE REST OF THE YEAR, HUNDREDS OF YOUNGSTERS FROM MTB MISSOULA AND MISSOULA PARKS AND RECREATION'S ZOOTOWN DERAILLEUR'S PROGRAM HONE THEIR SKILLS ON THE MOUNTAIN. FIVE VALLEYS IS THRILLED TO WORK WITH MTB MISSOULA AND THE CITY OF MISSOULA TO HELP PROVIDE THESE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR COMMUNITY.LINCOLN COMMUNITY RIVER PARK: IN OUR SECOND SUMMER SEASON OF OWNERSHIP, THE LINCOLN COMMUNITY RIVER PARK HAS GROWN INTO A POPULAR COMMUNITY SITE, USED BY FAMILIES, NATURE ENTHUSIASTS AND EDUCATORS ALIKE. THIS YEAR, THE LINCOLN COMMUNITY RIVER PARK WORKING GROUP DEVELOPED LONG-TERM PLANS FOR LOW- IMPACT PUBLIC ACCESS AND RECREATION, AND MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES. WITH HELP FROM THE PONDEROSA SNOW WARRIORS, A LOCAL SNOWMOBILING GROUP, WE CONTINUED OUR EFFORTS TO MITIGATE NOXIOUS WEEDS. IN ADDITION, FIVE VALLEYS STAFF PARTICIPATED IN ENVISION LINCOLN, A COLLABORATION OF LINCOLN-AREA STAKEHOLDERS THAT SEEKS TO USE LINCOLN'S LOCATION, RESOURCES AND ATTRACTIONS TO BUILD A FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY. ONE OF THE MAJOR ASPECTS OF ENVISION LINCOLN IS A TRAILS SYSTEM, AND THE RIVER PARK IS A CORNERSTONE OF THAT TRAILS PLAN. WE LOOK FORWARD TO WHAT FUTURE SEASONS WILL BRING TO THESE EXCITING EFFORTS.VOLUNTEERS: THE FIVE VALLEYS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM ENGAGED OVER 630 VOLUNTEERS IN 2018 WHO CONTRIBUTED OVER 3,500 HOURS TO SUPPORT CONSERVATION. THESE VOLUNTEERS INCLUDE OUR HANDS ON THE LAND STEWARDSHIP VOLUNTEERS, AND THOSE WHO WORKED AT OUR BANQUET, HELPED AROUND OUR OFFICE, AND ASSISTED OUR PARTNERS WITH SERIES OF RIVER USAGE SURVEYS OVER THE SUMMER.
