Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The audit committee reviews the form 990 and a copy is provided to all board members prior to filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All new board members are required to complete a conflict of interest statement as part of their orientation, and all existing board members are required to complete an updated form at the annual board meeting in october. The ceo's executive assistant is charged with making sure every board member has completed a form and reporting the outcomes to the audit committee chair.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Kcpt reviews annual data compiled by the corporation for public broadcasting to monitor comparable positions and salaries and to try to maintain a median level of compensation. This data is used to monitor staff salaries, ceo salaries, and benefit comparables for staff & ceo. Aggregate staff compensation and benefit information is reported and discussed throughout the year to the finance and hr committee of the board. The executive committee of the board establishes criteria that includes both the objective criteria for financial performance and subjective criteria for leadership and execution of the strategic plan. The executive committee meets with the ceo to discuss these criteria and then the committee determines any bonus and increase as an outcome of the evaluation. This review process was last completed on october 7, 2022.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERVICES:

In your neighborhood the education department conducts several area family workshops throughout the year. Most of these workshops are in head start programs at the ymca locations in the kansas city metropolitan area. The family workshops highlight pbs kids resources and access to our flagship digital service pbs learningmedia. This service has over 30,000 digital resources that can be access from a computer, tablet or smart phone. This program helps parents to prepare their children for kindergarten and continues through early elementary. Life's little lessons with daniel tiger this is a free 10-week program for early childhood centers. The program focused on helping preschoolers develop key social and emotional skills. Attendees view ten episodes of daniel tiger's neighborhood social and emotional programs, participate in related activities and receive 10 free books. Kansas city pbs distributes over 2,000 in the metro area for this program each year. Martha speaks reading buddies program this 10-week literacy program for elementary school pairs kindergartener little buddies with fourth grade big buddies. The big buddies mentor the little buddies and together they view ten episodes from the martha speaks program, participate in activities to encourage reading and received free books. The education team distributes over 1,000 books during this program each year. Black & veatch stem mentoring program the education team collaborates with black & veatch to conduct school visits and host interactive stem learning sessions focused on electricity, water and structural engineering. Through hands-on activities, students have the chance to explore and learn about each subject with the help from black & veatch engineers. This initiative reaches10 schools and engaged 600 fifth graders each year. To date we have been in 110 elementary schools and mentored over 6,500 fifth graders. Shows like week in review and flatland in focus kept us updated on local conversation informed by national dialogue, while programs like gospel, hosted by dr, henry louis gates, jr. And ken burns' the american buffalo shared inspiring stories that shaped our today. Local documentaries, like healing hate and passing the baton, and nichol's folly: a century of the country club plaza shed light on past stories that inform our present community. A series called harvesting change focused on the benefits of localized food systems for a community and the producers who are effectively utilizing sustainability practices in their everyday operations. And another installment of we are latinos shed light on artists and changemakers in the kansas city latinx community. Art house returned for its fifth season with special guests like academy award-winning filmmaker kevin wilmott and the team continued the memorial day tradition and partnership with the kansas city symphony with the bank of america celebration at the station.

PART X, LINE 2:

The station is exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code; however, the station is subject to income taxes on any net income from unrelated business activities. Uncertain tax positions, if any, are recorded in accordance with fasb asc 740, income taxes (previously fin 48). Fasb asc 740 requires the recognition of a liability for tax positions taken that do not meet the more-likely-than not standard that the position will be sustained upon examination by the taxing authorities. There is no liability for uncertain tax positions recorded as of june 30, 2024 and 2023. .
