In determining compensation of the Foundation's President, the Executive Committee of the board meets in August to review the Foundation President's performance. In the review of the compensation, the process begins with President having an opportunity to discuss the year and key highlights, and then the Executive Committee goes into a private session. The Hospital President and CEO shares the results of the Foundation President's performance with Executive Committee of the board at that time. During the last review, the committee used comparative information for positions similar to and used that to adjust the Foundation President's salary to a point they felt was appropriate. During the August board meeting the board formally approves the Foundation President's continuing as the Foundation President for another year.

IRS990/Desc0Mercy Hospital Foundation ("The Foundation") provided $625,006 in funding in fiscal year 2014 to Mercy Hospital Iowa City for facility improvements, medical equipment, patient comfort items, educational materials and programs, nursing and health career scholarships, artwork to enhance the Hospital's healing environment, and support for specific areas including Mercy Hospice Care, Mental Health Services, Diabetes Education and Cancer Care Services. Mercy Hospice Care and Mercy's Mental Health Services are receiving increased amounts of donor support due to the need for their services in Southeast Iowa. (See Schedule O)In addition to gifts that are designated for specific purposes in this area, many gifts are made to the Hospice Endowment Fund to ensure that care will continue to be available to anyone who needs it. Mercy's scholarship program continues to grow. In addition to providing renewable $1,000 Health Career Scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Mercy's 10-county service area who plan to major in a health care career in college, Mercy also awards Nursing Scholarships to employees who are continuing their advanced nursing education. In 2014 ten students received new Health Career Scholarships, 24 received renewals and 59 Nursing Scholarships were awarded to 42 employees. The Foundation provides books and other educational materials as a part of the care to patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes, and it provided support for a new program for heart failure patients, designed to help them learn to manage their disease at home and reduce readmissions to the hospital. An endowment fund to support Mental Health Services has been started to support the comprehensive and holistic services that Mercy provides in its inpatient unit. The medical and other equipment serves a general population of this hospital. The patient comfort items, educational materials and programs are directed by hospital staff to the appropriate patients.
