Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to help people make sense of the complex medical and personal information about breast health and breast cancer, so they can make the best decisions for their lives.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Prevention: breastcancer.org's prevention initiative continues to educate millions of women worldwide on risk reduction and prevention. For the year ended may 31, 2013, breastcancer.org spread the prevention message through literature distribution and presentations, and also conducted critical research to determine how best to communicate the message of the prevention program. Breastcancer.org reached over a half a million people with our prevention message through the distribution of booklets, columns and newsletters. And similarly, dr. Marisa weiss delivered prevention presentations to hundreds of influencers - including deloitte women's health conference, digitas' health conference, wanderlust, a nationwide event that is focused on creating community around mindful living, and a meredith corporation event with an audience of top editors from better homes & gardens, family circle, ladies' home journal, more, siempre mujer and fitness, in addition to others. Qualitative research was conducted that included nearly 2,000 women. Through focus groups, surveys and in-depth interviews, breastcancer.org learned what facets of the prevention program resonated most with women, as well as elements of the program's message that would have little impact on changing their behavior. These insights have allowed breastcancer.org to focus on messages that are most likely to drive women to incorporate specific lifestyle changes to reduce breast cancer risk. Media outreach efforts to promote the prevention program reached over 20 million people. Prevention information was featured in parents, ser padres and shape magazines. The lower your risk section on our website has over 400 pages of content. This includes a regular column titled think pink, live green, authored by dr. Marisa weiss, which discusses a way of living that aims to help women reduce their risk of breast cancer or the disease coming back in survivors. Breastcancer.org also distributes a booklet, think pink, live green: a step-by-step guide to reducing your risk of breast cancer.
Activity 3
Community: breastcancer.org hosts 73 vibrant, interactive, and well-used community forums with over 130,000 registered users that help women and their loved ones find support and create community during one of the most challenging times of their lives. Services provided include both discussion boards and chat rooms, which are professionally moderated. Some of the most active forums include "chemotherapy - before, during and after," "stage iv breast cancer," and "breast reconstruction." for the year ended may 31, 2013, the discussion boards received over 528,000 new posts, with an average of 1,447 posts per day. In addition, the community received over 6.7 million visits, with an average of 3,000 unique authors per month. In may 2012, breastcancer.org launched a mobile optimized version of the community forums.
