Governance Explanations

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 11B

The finance director reviews form 990 in detail with the accountant/auditor. The finance committee including several board members and the executive director review the form 990 before passing on to the entire board before filing.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 12C

Annual conflict of interest statements are required.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

The board of directors set the compensation for the executive director and provides compensation guidelines for other positions by its approval of the budget. Compensation levels within the organization have traditionally been lower than industry standards by the choice of the employees, who consider their work a ministry in service of god and humanity.

HAITI

Form 990, Part XII

Beyond borders supports haitians to build movements to: 1)end child servitude and other practices that harm children. 2)guarantee universal access to quality education. 3)end violence against women and girls (vawg). 4)promote economic justice and sustainable livelihoods. Beyond borders promotes dialogue, participation, and respectful exchange by facilitating communities to develop solutions to challenges they face. Beyond borders supports networks of individuals and communities addressing the educational needs and human rights issues of groups traditionally marginalized and without access to basic services. Fy 2020 achievements during the fiscal year ending june 30, 2020, beyond borders' complementary programming and work with local partners reached some of haiti's most vulnerable people in urban and rural communities in haiti's southeast, west, and central departments of haiti. Beyond borders employs 48 staff and operates programming out of three haiti-based offices in jacmel, port-au- prince, and on the island of la gonve, haiti. Using approaches to catalyze shifts in social norms and build local capacity to lead movements for change, beyond borders' 39 program staff impacted the lives of more than 20,000 individuals during the fiscal year. A highlight this year is beyond borders' collaboration with 119 government officials engaged through the movements to end child servitude, end vawg, and promote universal access to education. Covid-19 response this year, beyond borders - like much of the world - was particularly challenged by the covid-19 pandemic. Starting in march 2020, much of beyond borders' in-person, community-based programming was paused to prevent the spread of covid-19 among staff, community activists, and program participants. Beyond borders activated its emergency management team (emt) to include covid-19 to its ongoing monitoring of and response to other threat/risk scenarios. The emt monitored public health reports and implemented a four-level emergency contingency plan, making adjustments to travel and lodging modalities, procuring and distributing equipment to support key staff working remotely. In collaboration with activism networks, local government, and partners, beyond borders: - produced and distributed 10,000 masks, - raised prevention awareness in 32 communities through megaphone campaigns and digital platform messaging, - distributed 2,450 hygiene kits, - provided cash subsidies and family garden kits to 220 families, - provided materials and financial support for covid-19 treatment centers, and - developed and disseminated web-based and text messaging to prevent violence against women and girls and violence against children while families stayed home to prevent the spread of covid-19. The movement to end child servitude beyond borders works to catalyze a broad social movement for children's rights, with a special focus on stopping of the practice of child domestic servitude (restavk). In remote, rural regions of haiti, beyond borders' model community initiative accompanies communities to protect, educate and feed their children in order to stop the flow of children into child domestic servitude. In urban neighborhoods, it works to build local volunteer structures to help children access protection services when needed, and to help children living in child servitude find their way home. In 2020, beyond borders supported the movement to end child servitude in haiti by training and organizing networks of child rights activists within neighborhood child protection brigades (cpbs) and the survivors of restavk network (srn). These activists are change agents and virtual lifelines for children at risk; they raise awareness, train neighbors, mobilize their communities, intervene to protect children, and support rural parents to raise their children at home. Significant progress was made in building networks and relationships with strategic allies and partners. In both urban and rural communities, beyond bo
