Mission

Founded in 1859 as an orphanage, today the children's program of silver springs - martin luther school provides a home, treatment, education, and other services for children with special needs and their families from the five southeastern pennsylvania counties, other counties, and the state of delaware through residential treatment, a special education school, foster family care and community-based services, all in a nurturing and healing environment that promotes trauma recovery and resilience.in fy 2016/2017 silver springs - martin luther school served 2,326 individuals and families.

The intentions of the corporation are exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, particularly to provide a home, education, and support for destitute or dependent children and mental health services for such children and others without distinction of creed, color, or country, and to engage in related study and research.

The board has delegated review of the form 990 to the chief financial officer. The financial reporting manager prepares the form 990. The tax return is then reviewed by the independent accounting firm. The form 990 is presented to the chief financial officer and president/ceo for review. The president/ceo signs the final tax return.

Silver springs - martin lither school requires that all officers or trustees annually certify any and all possible conflicts of interest. All conflicts of interest are discussed with the persons involved. Persons involved with possible conflicts recused themselves from discussion of the trustees to determine the appropriate resolution of the conflict. Persons with noted conflicts are recused from voting on such measures.

The executive committee also is the personnel committee of the board of trustees and reviews the president/ceo's job performance. The board reviews and sets the president's compensation. The chief financial officer and president develop a budget with recommendations for compensation to the finance committee. The finance committee reviews and approves the budget and makes a recommendation to the board.

THE PROGRAM OFFERS STRUCTURED HOME LIVING WITH FOSTER PARENTS WHO ARE TRAINED TO PROVIDE FOR THE SPECIFIC, IDENTIFIED NEEDS OF EACH CHILD. CASE MANAGEMENT, VARIOUS CLINICAL THERAPIES AND OUTREACH SERVICES ARE EXTENDED TO EACH CHILD'S FOSTER FAMILY AND BIOLOGICAL FAMILY. CHILDREN ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN SPECIALIZED SUMMER EXPERIENCES DEPENDING UPON THEIR INDIVIDUAL, EDUCATIONAL, MEDICAL AND/OR EMOTIONAL NEEDS. STUDENTS ARE REFERRED TO MARTIN LUTHER SCHOOL FROM PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS. INDIVIDUAL EDUCATIONAL PLANS IDENTIFY THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL NEEDS AS "REQUIRING EMOTIONAL SUPPORT." IN ADDITION TO ACADEMIC, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL DEFICITS, MANY STUDENTS ATTENDING MARTIN LUTHER SCHOOL HAVE SIGNIFICANT LEARNING DISABILITIES. THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM IS AUGMENTED WITH TEACHER-DIRECTED GROUP INTERACTION AND A STRUCTURED, CARING AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT. EACH STUDENT HAS A COMPUTER FOR USE IN SCHOOL. SCHOOL FACILITIES INCLUDE A GYMNASIUM, OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL FACILITIES, A LIBRARY, TECHNOLOGY INSTRUCTION, SUPERVISED ACCESS TO THE INTERNET, TUTORING IN READING AND MATHEMATICS, AN ART ROOM AND A MUSIC ROOM.
