“The lewisburg listening post is dedicated to offering a strong and positive social support system to all of the students in the schools it serves by providing professional-supported, trained, and caring near-peer counselors (recruited from local universities) to the students as positive role models, mentors, and tutors. The lewisburg listening post and its near-peer counselors promote overal wellness, development of problem-solving and decision-making skills, and provide primary prevention by identifying serious issues and making referrals to guidance counselors.”

“The lewisburg listening post provided 3,593 near-peer visits to students in the lewisburg area school district. The average number of students visiting per day at the linntown intermediate school and eichhorn middle school were 12 and 24, respectively, for a total average of 36 students per day. Teams of 2 near-peers meet with 6-10 students in group mentoring sessions during all lunch periods. Also self select students meet at their school's llp room to talk with an actively listening near-peer in a relaxed atmosphere on their own volition. Topics discussed during the year were family relationships, bullying/ violence, diversity, academic stress, social relationships/social skills, self esteem, and drug/alcohol. Principals of both schools have made these remarks, "the interaction with college students enables our students to have the opportunity to ineract with positive role-models", and "students seek out the llp for the relaxed atmosphere, safe evironment anf friendliness of their peers and near- peers".”
